What can women do to reduce all-cause mortality (death) in menopause and beyond age 65? Keep using hormone replacement therapy. It is a myth that you cannot start HRT 10 years past menopause or beyond age 60. We no longer require you to stop taking HRT after age 65. The WHI study was flawed, and this has changed practice guidelines since we learned of this. New studies are showing significant risk reductions in death from hormone replace therapy - one such, transdermal estradiol was associated with a 20% risk reduction of death in women who continued use beyond age 65.

It's also the micronutrients--vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Many vitamins are co-factors for enzymatic processes in the body that are necessary for survival. Does your doctor draw your blood without having you prepare? It could be affecting the results. Thyroid lab tests are strongly affected by high dose Biotin (found in Hair, skin nails supplements and B-complex supplements often). It often will cause the labs to appear falsely normal. We prepare our clients by instructing them to avoid all biotin containing supplements for 72 hours prior to blood draws. Fasting and time of day also affects many labs. For females, hormone testing is affected by the phase of the menstrual cycle. Nutrient labs may require avoidance of certain foods and supplements plus fasting. Make sure you know before how to prepare before you get your labs done!

Reminder... Did you move your body today? Research is showing that the benefits of moving your body for just 10 minutes is HUGE! The more the better, but if you're starting at zero, aim for 10 minutes of movement. The more often you move, the better. Also, movement after meals can help lower blood sugar! Movement can be as simple as dancing to your favorite play list, marching in place while brushing your teeth, walking in circles around the table after dinner, or better yet going outside for a walk in nature. There's more than one option to treat menopausal symptoms. Say it louder. OCPs are not the only option. Vaginal estrogen is not the only option. Estrogen patches are not the only option. Options range from SSRIs for hot flashes, estrogen patches, estrogen creams, BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy), oral micronized progesterone, testosterone creams, nutritional, and herbal options... to name a few! The important thing is that you get to make the choice based on your risk factors, your preferences, and your treatment goals.

Reminder... Did you drink any water today? So many people we see are chronically dehydrated! Then there is the other extreme--excessive water drinking. Did you know that BOTH are equally as dangerous and can lead to death? How much hydration do you need? The general guidance is 8 x 8 ounces of water (64 ounces) per day. Some say, 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water, so if you weight 150 lbs, that's 75 ounces of water. Perhaps the best guide is the color of your urine because this reflects your kidney's function. Aim for light yellow (not clear) color to your urine. If you choose to put electrolytes in your water, watch the sodium content. Many major brands out there have 500-1000 mg sodium in one serving, which is way too much unless you're running an ultramarathon in the desert. In general, 2000 mg sodium per day is what we should be getting from our diet... not from two beverages!

Feeling tired all the time is NOT normal. Don't settle for "but your labs are normal." Odd are the provider has NOT ruled out ALL the differential diagnoses possible for your fatigue and has only run a very basic set of labs. You need someone who will gather the clues from your case history, select appropriate labs based on the most likely cause, and view those labs with functional reference ranges in mind. That's what Dr. Melissa will do for you because she "gets" it and does things a bit un-conventionally. That's the naturopathic way.

It all started as a distant dream...

As a small child, Melissa Bosserman, ND MS CCC-SLP, knew that she wanted to grow up to become a doctor. She was fascinated by the human body and nature. Yes, she was that kid whose favorite toys were Dr. Barbie, a Fisher Price plastic doctor’s kit, and later a child’s microscope. There was always some science experiment growing in her room, hidden away from her mother’s cleaning, until it went badly and the smell of rotting and molding plant material gave it away. In her early teens, her plans to prepare herself for college went awry when she fell ill with chronic dizziness due to a Vestibular disorder. The majority of her teens and twenties were spent healing and learning to adapt to life with chronic illness. During that time, Dr. Bosserman attended Portland State University where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Sciences in Speech-Language Pathology. Her interest grew in Speech-Language Pathology after seeing a Modified Barium Swallow Study for Dysphagia and working with people who suffered from strokes at PSU’s Aphasia Camp. After graduation from PSU, she worked primarily in skilled nursing facilities and hospitals providing speech therapy services and mentoring other graduate speech students. She always felt the calling to return to university to pursue a doctorate degree, but making the decision was difficult as she was torn between neuropsychology and naturopathic medicine. Ultimately, that childhood dream of becoming a doctor and her love of nature, fitness, botanical medicine, and nutrition won. Dr. Bosserman graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine in June of 2018 with a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and is a licensed naturopathic physician in Oregon after passing her licensing board exams that October. After working in healthcare for over 11 years as an SLP, she was familiar with the traditional doctors office- and therapy-mill with its too-short visits, high stress levels, and unrealistic productivity standards. The Boss Clinic, LLC grew out of Dr. Bosserman’s desire to provide quality patient-centered care, empower her patients to be in charge of their health, and to maintain her own healthy lifestyle in order to be a positive role model for her community. What started off as a distant dream is now our reality. We’d like to help you turn your dreams into your reality by empowering you to take charge of your health!
