What about our Older Adults and disabled individuals!

Good morning, valued providers and partners.

As you are hearing the news about the $25 million in emergency food assistance funds being released by Governor Dewine via Executive Order, I wanted to make sure you understood how this is being done. As noted in the press release below, $7 million will be provided to foodbanks. As foodbank's were reporting a shortage of food and federal funding already, I’m not sure if this will be enough to meet the need.

The remainder of the $18 million will be provided thru TANF benefits. Below are the eligibility requirements for TANF. This is good news for our Kinship families, who are caring for children and meet income and underemployment/unemployment requirements.

?However, the TANF funds will not help older adults and individuals who are disabled who are not responsible for a child?.

You’ll note the recipients of TANF benefits will receive an additional weekly benefit of ¼ their monthly allotment as long as SNAP benefits are not available thru November.

Sometimes, snoring is related to our lifestyle or how we sleep in general. If you’re senior is snoring at night, but not having other symptoms that indicate a more serious problem, consider looking at,

Allergens – if your senior has known allergies, make sure they’re sleeping in a room free of those allergens (such as pets) and consider if the room needs to be dusted or vacuumed more frequently. Additionally, an allergen mattress and pillow cover can help alleviate nighttime allergies.
Alcohol consumption – if your senior drinks, make sure they’re not drinking too much at night, as this can cause frequent snoring (and isn’t good for their overall health)
Sleeping position – how a person sleeps can affect whether they snore. Make sure they have a mattress and pillows that provide adequate support so that their airways remain open while sleeping.

Snacking at night is generally discouraged, but sometimes having a healthy snack at least an hour before bed can help your SENIOR sleep. Often senior who are not eating enough during the day will have trouble sleeping because they are hungry.

For those SENIORS who aren’t getting enough to eat, a healthy bedtime snack can improve their quality of sleep. Having a snack at night can also help seniors who have to take medicine at bedtime avoid getting heartburn or having other unpleasant side effects from the medication.

But the snack needs to be a healthy one. High calorie, high sugar, high fat snacks are not going to help your mom or dad sleep. Experts recommend that seniors who have trouble sleeping have a snack that provides protein at night. If your mom or dad has 24-hour home care, their night time care provider can help them prepare these healthy snacks

Poor hygiene in older adults can lead to various health issues, including infections, skin irritations, and even social isolation.

Factors like weakened immune systems, declining senses (smell), and potential depression can contribute to this problem.

Overcome the Poor Hygiene Power Struggle
If you find yourself in a power struggle with an elder who refuses to be “bossed around,” a little well-intended trickery can come in handy. See if you can get a close friend to call and extend an invitation out to lunch or some other gathering that requires a bit of primping. A reason to get cleaned up for someone besides family can sometimes do the trick. Bribery may seem childish, but the promise of a special treat, such as dinner at their favorite restaurant on their weekly bath day, can also be a powerful motivator.

Gardening has been shown to have significant positive effects on mental health. For seniors, engaging in gardening activities can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. The process of tending to plants and watching them grow provides a sense of purpose and achievement and spending time in nature promotes relaxation and reduces mental fatigue.

Your senior may live in an apartment BUT you can still start a little window garden!
