Dr. Cates acknowledged by Chiropractic Scientific Guideline Commission

Dr. Jeffrey Cates was acknowledged along with a group of selected experts for their Delphi process work updating information in the Chiropractic management of low back pain in adults: a clinical practice guideline, a 2016 guideline that was based on a systematic review co-authored by Dr. Cates. The group of experts employed a Delphi process where researched is reviewed and rated and establish medical practice guideline consensus for the United States. The updated work will soon be published

Dr. Cates has worked with the Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters for several decades and has published works that include several guidelines and medical journal articles on quality assurance and standards of care. Dr. Cates' published works are included in the medical literature. He maintains a private practice of chiropractic orthopedics in Oregon, IL.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has a great summary on diagnosis and management of low back pain. They recommend that "Surgery for low back pain should be considered only when nonsurgical treatment options have been tried and have failed. It is best to try nonsurgical options for 6 months to a year before considering surgery." There's more information on the website.

Low back pain sometimes occurs after a specific movement, such as lifting or bending. Just getting older also plays a role in many back conditions. This article explains some of the more common causes of low back pain and describes some general treatment options.
