Punch’s story isn’t just about a monkey and his stuffy, or abandonment alone; it’s about Attachment.

Attachment is not just an emotional bond; it’s a biological regulation system. In mammals, caregivers help regulate stress hormones, heartrate, temperature, and emotional arousal. When a caregiver is absent or rejecting, the nervous system loses its primary external regulator.

Punch’s distress reflects a body operating without the physiological support it evolved to depend on. The stuffy he clings to acts as a regulatory substitute, not an emotional replacement. Soft tactile input, predictability, and consistency can partially calm the nervous system.

But attachment systems do shut down under rejection; they activate even stronger. When this regulation they need from missing a safe adult, the body remains in survival mode, limiting exploration and flexibility. When Punch was FINALLY accepted by adult monkeys, his nervous system gained access to something it had been missing: Co-Regulation. Nervous systems can heal through repeated experiences of safety, not one-time moments. Each calm interaction, shared warmth, and predictable response helps the body learn that regulation no longer has to come from objects alone.

Early attachment disruption does not mean permanent damage. With consistent, attuned connection, the heart, mind, and nervous system begin to shift from “I am alone” to “I am seen, loved, and known.”

Learn about your attachment and ways to create secure attachment, heal attachment wounds, and become an even better version of you.
