Depression is heavy. It’s super heavy. And each well-intentioned piece of advice from friends or even therapists adds to the load. Despite the potential benefits of exercise regimens, dietary changes, prescription antidepressants, and seeking social support—essential mental health strategies—they often feel like temporary lifelines that don't address the root causes of mental illness. You're searching for more than just fleeting depression relief; you're seeking a lasting solution, a comprehensive mental health treatment that goes beyond the surface. In a world where taking on more tasks feels like an insurmountable challenge, understanding that depression isn't a choice but a relentless condition shaped by genetics, brain chemistry, traumatic events, and life’s upheavals is crucial. It’s about recognizing that every strategy to reduce depression symptoms demands significantly more from someone who’s already stretched thin. But acknowledging its complexity is the first step towards a sustainable healing process—one where the vest can finally be unclasped, and you can breathe freely in the knowledge that you're not walking this path alone.

"Last week, I was devastated, but I feel fine now. Like it never happened"
"Sorry, can you say that again, I can't focus on anything right now."
"I don't really do happy anymore. I don't really do feelings in general."
"Don't mind me, I'm dead inside."
"The only thing that keeps my anxiety at bay is binge-watching shows."

Most of us, at some point, fall into dissociative states. It's usually after a somewhat traumatic experience or when we are so overwhelmed by life that our brain can't handle anything else. It's a totally normal response to extreme stress. But if you feel like you're detached from life more often than not, it might be a symptom of a more severe condition (such as PTSD/CPTSD, BPD, major depression, etc.). In short, your psyche doesn't always feel safe in your body, so it detaches to protect itself.

Mindfulness and grounding techniques can be helpful as immediate tools to reconnect with the present moment. However, they are just part of a larger healing journey. To truly overcome dissociation, you have to address the root causes.

We use ego-state therapy, neurofeedback, and other treatment techniques to help you feel safe in your body.

Parent-adult child estrangement is a painful reality, requiring a shift in our roles as parents. While it's natural for children to distance themselves as they grow, maintaining respect and support is crucial. Allow them to define boundaries and refrain from getting defensive about past mistakes. Instead, offer genuine apologies and unconditional love. Focus on being a safe, supportive presence in their lives, even if they choose to keep their distance. With patience and understanding, hope for reconciliation remains.

Trauma is a huge risk factor for ADHD! When you are exposed to trauma while your brain is still developing (which is anytime earlier than your mid-twenties), your brain adapts to compensate for that trauma. Your limited brain power is almost entirely devoted to your hyperactive amygdala and it doesn't have the resources to devote to the development of the prefrontal cortex or memory consolidation.

In short, when you're stuck in survival mode, you don't have time for executive function or to emotionally process what has happened to you. And treatment for ADHD in those with a history of trauma has to take that into account!

Read the article and take our quiz to see if your ADHD could have been caused by trauma!
