This week, kindergarteners checked in on the beans they planted earlier in the semester. Boy, did they grow! (The beans and the kids🤭)

Students got to eat Royal Burgundy bush beans, pink and yellow Swiss chard, and Cosmic Purple carrots fresh from the garden–they really tasted the rainbow🌈🫛🥕🥬

Then, they learned a little about soil health and plant nutrition while adding compost to a garden bed🪏👐

April showers bring May flowers. Specifically, nasturtiums!🏵️

Our nasturtiums have just started to bloom after the recent rainstorms. Their strong peppery flavor is not only delicious as a garnish, it plays a helpful role in pest management too!

Nasturtiums repel some bugs we don’t want around, attract others we do, and–stay with us here–also attracts certain pests we’d rather munch on our flowers than the veggies we need for class. 🦗👨‍🌾

With the weather warming up, here’s a HOT tip: now’s the time to check if your sprinklers are evenly watering your garden💦🌞

You can do this by placing uniformly-sized cans throughout each sprinkler zone, then running them for 15 minutes. Measure how much water was collected in each can, take an average, and use your results to set sprinkler timers so that your garden gets a half-inch of water each time they run.
