We are now accepting submissions for The Script, so please consider contributing your creative works to the 2022-2023 edition!

The Script is UCF COM’s magazine showcasing literary and visual art created by the COM’s very own faculty, staff, and students. It is home to a variety of artistic expressions including poems, short stories, drawings, paintings, and photography, but we are open to anything printable and reasonably appropriate. We have historically received an abundance of visual art submissions, so we would like to continue to strongly encourage you to submit literary pieces, as well. Please do not be shy - this magazine is meant to be a sacred space for expression and vulnerability, and an escape from our medically focused minds, so please consider submitting. Also, as an additional incentive to submit, we would like to share that these entries can be listed as publications on your CV!
The Script features 4 major themes: Life, Death, Emotion, and Perception. Of course, we welcome all interpretations of these themes, and you are welcome to submit as many pieces as you would like! Work that has been previously published in a different art journal is still eligible for submission to The Script. Fiction and non-fiction are equally welcomed in our publication.

The deadline for submissions is August 14th, 2022, at 11:59 p.m.
The link to submit is as follows: https://ucf.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3k5muZvSuW7jKT4
(Please write out your full name, first and last; students – you do not need to worry about including a title unless you wish to do so. Please name your files as either "yourartworktitle_yourname" or as "untitled_yourname." Thank you!)

We truly look forward to collaborating with you.

Last but not least, here is our AIM treasurer, Nikita Sardana 🎉

We asked our board members why they are passionate about arts in medicine, and this is Nikita’s response:

I'm passionate about arts in medicine because I believe it's one of the best outlets for us to reflect and understand ourselves better. Creating art--whatever that means for each of us--is a universally cathartic experience that allows us to bring meaning to our emotions and experiences. In turn, it makes us better people who can better connect with our patients. And also, it's fun!

We have an incredible line-up of events and activities for this upcoming year and will be announcing them on this page, so follow us for more!

See you soon!

Next up, we have Brittany Thompson, the AIM Visual Arts Chair!

Brittany has been a dancer since she was 3 years old and has always been drawn towards the arts as a way to express herself. She also enjoys photography and painting!

Here are a few of Brittany’s words about why she is passionate about arts in medicine:

“Art is definitely a way to relieve stress for me whether I’m dancing myself or appreciating it by watching Phantom of the Opera on repeat. I believe that creative pursuits can have a great positive effect on mental health and I can’t wait to learn more about the ties between art and medicine.”

Next up, we have Rachel Shi who is the AIM Creative Arts Director and is excited to be managing AIM’s social media pages and helping plan events!

As with previous posts, we are sharing Rachel’s response about why she is passionate about arts in medicine:

“The arts and creative expression bring new perspectives, meaning, balance, and diversity to life. I believe that art is something that can heal just as much as laughter and sleep do. I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for my passion for painting, playing piano, and photography.
I am so excited to work with such a talented team and to be a part of the AIM mission of integrating the arts and sciences and using the arts to enrich the lives of others. I hope you’ll be a part of this journey too!”

Please follow our page, if you haven’t already, so you don’t miss out on announcements about future events! 📣

Next up, we are introducing our two Performance Arts Co-chairs, Kevin Ruiz and Marianne Sia! 👏

We are so glad to have them on our team to plan one of the most anticipated events that AIM organizes each year: the winter showcase! We will have our 12th Annual Showcase this winter, replete with performances and a visual arts gallery. More details to follow!

We asked our board members why they are passionate about arts and medicine, and here are Kevin and Marianne’s responses:

“I'm excited to be a part of AIM because this organization is a great way for the COM - students, faculty, staff, and SPs - to showcase their creativity and ingenuity outside of the classroom. It can help us demonstrate how art can bring together a sense of community which goes beyond roles in a school or hospital.” —Kevin Ruiz

“Arts in Medicine provides an avenue for us to foster our creative expression and explore the individualized human experiences of the patients we treat. As the Performing Arts Co-Chair, I'm very much looking forward to what Arts in Medicine has to bring this year!” —Marianne Sia

For our next post, we have Vice President, Samantha Sun! 🎉

We asked our board members what makes them passionate about arts in medicine, and these are Samantha’s words:

I am passionate about the Arts in Medicine (AiM) because I believe the arts bring people together and create an accessible and effective form of healing from mind to body. I have been involved in artistic pursuits from painting to playing the piano since I was little, but it wasn't until my undergraduate years that I became aware of AiM. As a volunteer pianist for UF's Shands Cancer Hospital, I witnessed the power the music I created had on improving the well-being of patients, their families, and staff. It gave them a moment to let go of their thoughts/fears/stress. The arts have the potential to allow for catharsis and can even create beauty out of not so beautiful situations. They are also a great form of stress relief; I personally can't go a day without listening to Spotify.😅
I am so excited to help spread the word about AiM and show how the arts are a great way to improve the lives of our patients and ourselves! ❤️

Be on the look out for our next post featuring our secretary, Megan!
