Tonight on Food for the Heart, we will explore a theme many are longing for but struggling to find: mental peace.

This session, Scripture's Path for Mental Peace, looks at the biblical archetype of justice as a foundation for inner healing. Together we will reflect on the difference between the peace offered by the world and the peace Christ gives, and consider how restoring a biblical understanding of justice can bring clarity, stability, and hope in the midst of mental and emotional strain.

Our speaker tonight is Servio Cordoba, a psychologist and registered psychotherapist in progress in Canada. He is a third generation Seventh-day Adventist, a husband, and a father of two daughters. Servio brings both professional insight and a deep commitment to Scripture as he guides us through this conversation on faith, justice, and mental well being.

Some Christians reject Christmas, especially Christmas lights, thought to be rooted in the winter solstice-light festival of pagan Rome.

But Dr. Richard Davidson has come to believe there could be a biblical basis for a December 25 Christmas. What Davidson calls “the other Christmas story” involves, not the birth, but the incarnation of Jesus.

Davidson makes a case for the aged priest Zechariah impregnating his also-aged wife Elizabeth around the end of June. Davidson points out that Luke 1 makes clear that Mary, the mother of Jesus and Elizabeth’s cousin, became pregnant by the Spirit in the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. This would be around the time of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. Dr. Davidson suggests that, and provides evidence for, the day of conception possibly being December 25. He says that instead of Merry Christmas, we should say, “Happy Conception Day!”

So, it seems that paganism didn’t just create a fake holiday on December 25th but heisted an existing one and rebranded it. Maybe we should take it back! In any case, we can rejoice in that moment of conception when, beginning as one cell, the Sovereign God became flesh.

My Christmas gift to you is Dr. Davidson’s research - read it at Abide.Network/blog or get it instantly by commenting “LIGHTS.” And if this idea challenges you, excites you, or raises questions, comment LIGHTS and join the conversation.

During the Christmas season, most of us turn to the familiar stories - the shepherds in the fields (Luke 2), Wise Men following a star (Matthew 2), and baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes. We know these accounts by heart.

But there's another Gospel story about Christ's incarnation that rarely gets airtime during Christmas. And it just might change the way you see this season.

This Friday night, join Dr. Richard Davidson, Senior Research Professor of Old Testament at Andrews University, as he unpacks "The Other Christmas Story"—a profound account that widens and deepens our understanding of Immanuel, the Light of the World who stepped into darkness to bring us life.

You'll walk away with:
A richer, cosmic view of Christmas
Fresh reasons to praise Jesus this season
A deeper grasp of what the incarnation truly means

Plus, Dr. Davidson will share his PowerPoint slides and a copy of the message with all attendees!

“When the Nest Opens” is a hope-filled, biblically grounded presentation that challenges the common narratives surrounding the empty nest season and replaces them with God’s vision for a growing, flourishing family. Through Scripture, neuroscience, and family systems insights, Latonia Schmidt, LMFT, offers a refreshing perspective that sees this transition not as loss, but as an invitation to deeper connection, strengthened marriage, and renewed purpose.

Join Latonia in exploring how God can renew marriage, personal identity, and life direction as He expands your family tree across generations. This message will help you see the “empty nest” as an open nest, a time of spiritual enlargement, emotional renewal, and relational transformation. You will gain clarity around healthy differentiation so you can stay lovingly connected to adult children without losing yourself or your calling.

Who this is for: Parents approaching or entering the empty nest season. Grandparents navigating shifting family roles and expectations. Ministry leaders and helpers who support families in transition. Anyone who wants a more biblical and hopeful vision for later family life stages.

Breaking the Chains of Idolatry: A Journey Into True Healing

If you’ve ever prayed for God’s help while quietly clinging to people or things to steady your heart…

If you’ve wondered why you still feel anxious, empty, or spiritually stuck even though you trust God…

This week’s Food for the Heart is for you.

David Jones is joining us to talk about something we rarely name: the subtle idols that shape our emotions, drain our peace, and block the healing God is trying to give us. Idolatry doesn’t always look dramatic. It looks like comparison. It looks like coveting. It looks like needing approval or comfort to feel whole. David will show us how to recognize these patterns, release them, and return to the freedom of relying fully on God.

David is an LMFT and NCC licensed in CA, NV, and WA, and a PhD candidate. He has spent his career serving at-risk youth, military veterans, and adults facing trauma, bringing a blend of clinical experience, biblical insight, and deep compassion to every setting.

With the holidays upon us, many feel the joy, the hope of what’s to come, and reflect on Christ’s generous gift. But for others it is lonely and isolating. Just another holiday season of performing “fine” while running on empty.

You probably know her...
She's the woman at church who's always serving.
Always smiling.
Always "fine."

She's tired in a way sleep doesn't fix.
And she can't remember the last time someone took care of her.
Abiding Place Farm was built for her.

I've been her. And I've sat across from hundreds of women just like her.

She needs…
A quiet porch where she doesn't have to perform
Quiet warm breezes off the lake
Space to breathe
Space to grieve
Space to hear God's voice again without the noise

Before the pandemic, the farm hosted retreats, counseling intensives, and deep spiritual rest. Women left restored. Marriages that felt over found a new beginning. Trauma survivors finally exhaled.

We've been closed too long. And we need your help to reopen.

Thanks to a generous donor, we've been awarded a $50,000 matching grant to restore and upgrade the property. But here's the catch - we have to raise $50,000 ourselves to unlock it.

We're 80% there. Giving Tuesday is our last big push before the year closes.

Here's what your matched gift makes possible:
A weekend where a couple who came ready to quit leave holding each others hands again
Peaceful spaces where a woman who's been carrying everyone else finally exhales
Recovery tools like an infrared sauna and cold plunge that help trauma leave the body, not just the mind
Porch conversations where someone shares their story out loud for the first time amongst the beautiful garden views
A haven protected from flooding so it's standing ready for women and couples who needs it

We're close. You can carry us to the finish line.

This Giving Tuesday, help us reopen a place of rest.
Every gift is DOUBLED.

With Thanksgiving: Holding Sorrow and Gratitude Together

If you've been told to "just be grateful" one more time and felt the sting of being unseen...

If you've wondered whether you're allowed to bring both your grief AND your thanks to God...

This week's Food for the Heart is for you.

Caitlin Musgrave is joining us to talk about something we don't say out loud enough: Gratitude and sorrow are not opposites. They were designed to coexist.
