✨ Often in our relationships, families, children and even in our therapy we get distracted by behaviors (the symptoms) rather than the cause(s).

Behaviors tend to get the most attention but if we slow down and focus on what needs are not being met we can truly connect and correct the core issue.

For example, with children or in intimate relationships we often focus on a tantrum or argument as bad behavior when it is often deeper than that. Can you slow down and ask yourself in these situations; does my child/partner feel heard, seen, supported, validated, loved, or acknowledged. If not, those are the roots.

Throughout our childhood we learn to deal with emotions, respond to the world, and engage in relationships via observations from our family of origin. Sometimes our foundations have been solid but other times there leaves much room for growth.

In therapy, we can learn better:

Focusing on the positive, improves mental health by triggering the release of beneficial neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which create feelings of pleasure and well-being.

✨ In positive psychology research, gratitude and appreciation are strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness, increased positive emotions, stronger relationships and a greater sense of overall well-being.

TIPS for cultivating a practice of gratitude throughout the year:

📝 Keep a gratitude journal and regularly write down things you are grateful for

🗣️ Express thanks verbally by telling people directly when you appreciate something they do

🧘‍♂️ Practice mindfulness by paying attention to positive experiences in the moment and focus on appreciating the small things

‘Tis the season... to set boundaries!!!

It can be super uncomfortable to set boundaries and the holidays can cause a lot of anxiety.

But boundaries don’t have to be unkind and firmly setting limits helps maintain your mental health and wellness.

This holiday season, I encourage you to take a moment to pause before you commit to anything and ask yourself, what is best for me, my kids, my relationship etc? Then practice how you can assertively and respectfully set boundaries over the upcoming holidays 🦃🕎❄️🐫🎄🎆
