At American Spine & Orthopaedic Institute, we regularly perform knee surgeries, from minor procedures to full knee replacements.

When might knee surgery be required?

Patella injuries can happen after a fall or a blow to the knee. Surgery is required in some cases, such as patellar tendon tears or patella bone fractures.

Most ACL injuries occur during certain sports like soccer, basketball, or football. Surgery is commonly required after an ACL injury, depending on its severity and the individual’s level of activity.

The required surgery depends on the type and severity of the knee injury. In some cases, arthroscopy - a minimally invasive option - is sufficient. In others, a total knee replacement is recommended.

It’s true! As a patient, the more information you have about your health care, the better you can make decisions about what is best for you.

Work with your doctor and other healthcare professionals, and participate in all decisions about your treatment.

Keep records about your medical history and share up-to-date details with your healthcare.

You and your doctor should agree about exactly what will be done during each step of your care.

Know who will take care of you, how long treatment will last, and how you should feel.

Ask to speak with other people who have undergone a procedure you are considering. They can help you prepare for what to expect and the best ways to recover.

We talk a lot about minimally invasive surgery. But what does that really mean?

Traditional, open surgery required a 6-inch incision into soft tissue to access the spine during surgery. Soft tissue and muscle need time to heal, and because of the large incision, this surgery took many months for a full recovery.

Minimally invasive techniques use several small incisions in the torso. Doctors place their tools in the openings and perform the surgery with the help of a tiny camera guiding their view. The lack of soft tissue damage makes minimally invasive procedures easier on the body, allowing for fast recuperation and less pain than other options.

A stinger is a sports-related injury to the nerves of the neck or shoulder, most common in football 🏈and wrestling.

How does the injury occur?

As the head is forced backward and to the side, a spinal nerve in the neck can be compressed. If the head is forced sideways away from the shoulder, the neck and shoulder nerves may overstretch.

An athlete with a stinger 💥 will experience sudden, painful electrical sensations radiating through one arm, often lasting seconds or minutes and sometimes much longer. Arm and shoulder weakness caused by the injured nerve frequently accompanies the stinging pain.

Stingers often go unreported, but they tend to recur and worsen if not properly diagnosed and treated. This can lead to persistent pain or even arm weakness, which can eventually result in extended lost playing time.

We treat stingers and other sport-related injuries at ASOI! Come see us to get back in the game.

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) helps doctors incorporate the best available scientific evidence into their individual patient care decisions.

Today, there is a constant flow of new information regarding technology, drugs, and research. Doctors who can easily access current best evidence are able to combine it with their own clinical expertise to determine how the research may help meet patients’ individual treatment needs.

We are committed to practicing evidence-based medicine here at American Spine & Orthopaedic Institute.

Sport-related injuries can happen for a number of reasons. Improper gear, poor training practices, lack of fitness, and insufficient stretching can lead to an injury. That being said, accidents still happen, even if you’re doing everything else correctly.

If you get hurt, stop playing. Continuing to play or exercise can cause more harm. Treatment often begins with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method to relieve pain, reduce swelling, and speed up healing.

We treat sports injuries at ASOI! Come see us to get back in the game.

The sacroiliac (SI) joints are strong joints between the sacrum of your spine and the ilium sections of the pelvis. Their function is both shock absorption and torque conversion, to transfer movement in your lower body up to your spine. Inflammation, normal wear and tear, or a single accident can damage your SI joints, affecting their normal movement and creating chronic and debilitating low back pain.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction refers to pain in the SI joint region due to abnormal movement – either too much or too little - in the SI joint.

ASOI treats SI joint dysfunction. Contact us to learn more! Winter Garden and Orlando: call (407) 440-2728; Bonita Springs: call (239) 747-1644.
