What a night! Alumni, faculty, staff and friends gathered at the Innovation Gateway for the College of Health Professions and Sciences’ 2nd Annual Alumni Celebration.

Attendees “beamed” into our hologram machine, explored our immersive simulation suite, and stepped inside our new anechoic chamber while connecting with old and new friends and enjoying food, signature cocktails and entertainment.

The well-attended event included tours of the Rehabilitation Innovation Center, the Communication Technologies Research Center, the Aphasia House, the FAAST Center and the Mobile Health Clinic. Guests had a firsthand look at some of our innovative technology and the transformational spaces used for teaching, research, clinical practice and community service.

The opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Games takes place today and as the world turns its attention to watching the best athletes in the world compete, WESH 2 News stopped by CHPS to talk about what it really takes to train at an Olympic level.

Jeff Stout, Director of UCF’s School of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences, says it starts with genetics, a lot of hard work, and thousands of hours spent refining highly technical skills. Over the years, he has worked with everyone from NASCAR pit crews to Olympians, and now the Olympic dream is close to home, with his daughter training in hopes of representing Team USA in judo at the next Summer Games.

According to Stout, no Olympian gets there alone. Behind every athlete is a team of coaches, sport scientists, nutritionists, physicians and sports psychologists, and often it is the mental side that separates podium winners from the rest of the field.

With the Winter Games around the corner, it's hard not to watch in awe and wonder what it really takes to train at that level.

Can AI help that aching feeling in your lower-back? Associate Professor and READY Lab Director Colby Mangum in the UCF Athletic Training Program is working on a study that may find out.

Mangum is collecting ultrasound imaging data on those who suffer from lower-back pain and those who don't. This data will help train AI about the human body and could lead to more efficient ultrasound analysis and faster diagnoses.

Mangum and UCF College of Medicine Associate Professor Laura Brattain, Mangum's research partner and an expert in biomedical AI, met with WESH2 to give a deeper look at their study. Watch the full interview below:
