When stress hits, our brains are wired to protect us.

We often think of “fight or flight” but there’s a third response that shows up when neither feels possible: dissociation.

When a situation feels overwhelming and we can’t fight or run, our brain adapts. It creates distance between us and what’s happening around us. You might zone out, feel numb, disconnect from your body, or like you’re just going through the motions.

over time, this response can start to show up even when we’re no longer in danger, making it harder to stay present, connected, and engaged in our lives and relationships.

Through approaches like EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and Trauma-Focused CBT we can begin to gently reconnect with your body, build a sense of safety, and develop tools to stay grounded in stressful moments.

Have you ever noticed how your body holds onto stress, even when your mind tries to move on? In this reel Amy discusses bestseller book, 'The Body Keeps the Score' and its relation to how our brains and bodies respond to our past trauma. We’re reminded that our experiences don’t just live in our thoughts, they live in our nervous system, our physical reactions, and the way we show up in relationships.

Our therapists employ a number of techniques that help us to process past trauma, including EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and Trauma-Focused CBT which work with both the mind and body to gently release stuck survival responses.

Are you dreading Daylight Savings time? This Sunday, March 8th, the clocks skip forward and we lose a whole hour of sleep!

Did you know that therapy can help you develop better sleep habits and create a wind-down routine that signals to your brain that it’s time to rest? In this video, our owner and therapist Amy Eshleman talks about how constant stimulation, especially from our phones and social media, can prevent the brain from entering "relax mode".

If you're ready to build healthier habits and get better sleep, you can book an appointment at Coherence Counseling:

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his tireless efforts to advance racial equality and the civil rights movement. His work reminds us that compassion, empathy, and understanding are essential both in creating social change and in how we treat one another every day. As we reflect on his legacy we are encouraged to support one another, foster connection, and continue working toward a more just and compassionate world.

Many people use the new year to set goals around health, balance, and personal growth. Mental wellness is an important part of that picture, and it often sets the foundation for lasting change. When you feel emotionally supported, it becomes easier to follow through on the habits you want to build, whether that means managing stress more effectively, improving relationships, or feeling more present in your day to day life.

At Coherence Counseling, we help clients turn intentions into sustainable practices by supporting emotional health, self awareness, and resilience.

Start off the year by investing in you.

Our brains are always working behind the scenes to keep us safe. When you have lived through trauma, the brain learns to scan for danger even when the present moment is not actually threatening. This can show up as anxiety that feels sudden or overwhelming. Amy works with clients using a variety of therapy techniques that help your system learn that it is safe now. With support, you can regain a sense of calm, connection, and resilience.

If you would like to start working on anxiety and build a calmer foundation, you can book with one of our therapists at the link below: https://coherencecounseling.janeapp.com/

Every relationship has its bright moments, its confusing moments, and a few debates that somehow escalate out of nowhere. Couples counseling gives you a space to step back, understand your patterns, and rebuild your connection.

It’s not about picking sides, and it’s not a courtroom. You don’t need to rehash every past argument. Instead, it’s about resetting your connection, improving communication, and learning how to navigate conflict without stress or door slamming.

Therapy does not have to feel heavy all the time. Sometimes the best way forward is realizing how hilariously human your arguments are. Humor does not dismiss the hard stuff. It makes it easier to face it together.

If you’re ready to feel closer, more understood, and more like a team, we’re here for you.
