Letâs break some stigmas about late identified Autism for Autism Awareness Month:l
1. Late diagnosis doesnât mean mild:
Many adults, especially women, nonbinary individuals, and marginalized groups were overlooked due to outdated stereotypes. Late diagnosis often reflects masking, misdiagnosis, or lack of access, not lack of support needs.
2. Masking can look like functioning but comes at a cost: Late diagnosed autistic adults often spend years hiding their traits to fit in. This can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and identity confusion. What looks like âcoping wellâ is often chronic survival mode.
3. Autism doesnât suddenly appear in adulthood: Autistic adults have always been autistic the diagnosis simply provides language and understanding for lifelong patterns, challenges, and strengths.
4. Many late diagnosed adults were misdiagnosed first: Itâs common to see prior diagnoses like anxiety, depression, or personality disorders. While these can co-occur, they often donât fully explain the autistic experience.
5. Diagnosis can be life changing in a good way. For many, a late diagnosis brings relief, self-compassion, and clarity. It allows people to stop blaming themselves and start building a life that actually fits their needs.
