Day 8 of discovering the power of food: KIMCHI!

Filled with fiber, vitamins, minerals and PROBIOTICS specifically lactobacillus.

One cup of unpasteurized kimchi (and even sauerkraut) can contain up to the TRILLIONS of CFUs (colony forming units)!!!!

Many probiotic supplements contain up to 20 billion CFUs so you are getting so much more bang for your buck by eating fermented food especially since many of the bacteria *does* withstand the stomach acid compared to many supplements.

I wouldn’t worry about the “unpasteurization” during pregnancy and for kids (even 6+months old) due to the major gut and health benefits with unpasteurized fermented foods.

**If you do have histamine concerns, I would avoid kimchi as it is high in histamines but that’s an issue I would address - our team of functional dietitians would love to help you address potential histamine intolerance/histamine overload - comment support!

Do you eat kimchi or other fermented foods?

Day 7 of my National Nutrition Month where I’m highlighting different foods and their “power” on your health.

Today is tomato paste! So underrated and surprisingly a POWERHOUSE!

Tomato paste is a concentrated source of lycopene - an antioxidant, making it up to 10–20 times more concentrated in lycopene than fresh tomatoes!!!!

Cooking it in fat (like olive oil), further enhances the absorption.

Many recipes call for just 1tbsp or so, I add the whole small can 😆

Such a CHEAP option for supporting your health

I add it to my chili, spaghetti sauce, lasagna - anything that calls for tomato sauce, I’ll also add the paste.

Do you use tomato paste? Let me know below!

Today’s food is DARK CHOCOLATE.

High-quality dark chocolate — 73-85% or higher is rich in magnesium, iron, and powerful antioxidants called flavonoids.

It also has compounds that supports oxytocin - your feel good hormone and letdown hormone for breastfeeding!

If you’re craving chocolate, your body might actually be asking for minerals!
Here’s your permission to ADD some dark chocolate into your day and see how you feel, might try it before/during nursing too.

Drop a 🍫 if you’re team dark chocolate.

And if you’re looking for a food based approach to healing and feeling your best, comment “support”, our team of registered dietitians are here for you.

Todays food for National Nutrition Month are PUMPKIN SEEDS!

If you’re pregnant, make them your new best friend! And if you’re breastfeeding, also make them your best friend 😆

They’re a great easy snack with a punch of protein, magnesium, B vitamins, potassium, zinc and fiber!

I carried a bag of these during my twin pregnancy when I’d feel queasy and they helped SO much!
Then they’re easy on the go and one handed snacks when nursing!

Let me know below- do you eat pumpkin seeds ? How do you use it?

Had to make my own spin off on McDonald’s video 😅

Homemade burgers can actually be very nutritious! It’s all about what you’re adding to it.

We use grass fed ground beef, sometimes I add liver to it 😆🤭🤫 I cut up onions and mushroom very finely and add to the meat (adds more fiber plus helps stretch the meat). Add some Worcestershire sauce, salt pepper, mustard. Cook in the oven on a cookie sheet over a baking sheet at 425 for 15-20mins.

Toppings we’ll do lettuce, tomato, avocado, red onion, mustard and ketchup.

Sometimes we make our own fries but I also love the Alexa sweet potato fries.

So good!
Do you make homemade burgers?
And have you seen the Big Arch video 😂

Also special shoutout to my family for watching me film this and trying to stay quiet hahah 😅

Since it’s National Nutrition Month — I’m doing a mini series on different foods and the benefits/power they have for you.
Todays food are POTATOES

Unfortunately diet culture has demonized potatoes, but they really are a powerhouse and are a great food to incorporate into your meals.

Potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, containing roughly 620–900 mg. We need about 4700mg of potassium/day so potatoes give you a huge bang for your buck!

Plus it’s super cheap and versatile!

Let me know below- do you eat potatoes? How do you use it?

March is National Nutrition Month and this year‘s theme is Discover the Power of FOOD

Today’s food I’m highlighting is Canned SALMON.

Canned salmon is an affordable and easy way to get your protein, omega 3 fatty acids, and trace minerals 🙌🏼

When choosing your canned fish, look for “wild caught” and preferably “sustainably sourced”. I know a lot of people fear canned, but the benefits of the food FAR outweigh your risks.

Salmon is also low mercury which is a plus for pregnancy fish options.

Let me know below- do you buy canned fish? How do you use it?
