Newly released data from the CDC shows a worrying increase in measles cases across the country. Another 145 measles cases were confirmed last week, bringing the total so far this year to 733. At this time last year, there were only around 65 cases.

The best way to protect against measles is with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR is safe and effective. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles.

Newly released data from the CDC shows a worrying increase in measles cases across the country. Another 145 measles cases were confirmed last week, bringing the total so far this year to 733. At this time last year, there were only around 65 cases.

Measles cases have been reported in 20 states and 85% have been among children and teens. Cases have been spreading rapidly in South Carolina, where an outbreak started last fall, as well as in Arizona and Utah.

The AAP recommends children receive the two-dose MMR vaccine series for the strongest protection against measles. Read the full piece in AAP News: https://bit.ly/4qX7Ydz

Public Health Day at the State Capitol!

Every year, local public health departments are invited to meet with our state representatives to educate them about public health issues impacting our communities. We had the honor of meeting with Senator Megan Dahle (District 1), members from Assemblyman James Gallagher's office and other Northstate county representatives.

We discussed the importance of funding technology that helps track infectious diseases and share information quickly between healthcare providers and public health agencies. We also talked about how Medi-Cal changes can affect access to care in local communities and why it’s important to keep lawmakers informed.

Public Health Reports First Flu Deaths This Season, Urges Vaccination

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – Butte County Public Health (BCPH) has confirmed the first two influenza-related deaths of the 2025-26 flu season. Both individuals, who were in their 50s, were hospitalized and died from complications related to influenza. These deaths highlight the serious risks associated with seasonal flu. Residents, especially those at higher risk of severe illness, are urged to get vaccinated and take preventive steps to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.

“No one expects to lose someone to the flu, and that’s what makes a moment like this especially hard,” said Dr. Jarett Beaudoin, Butte County Health Officer. “All of us at the Health Department extend our condolences to the family and friends who loved these people and are grieving their loss.”

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death. BCPH strongly encourages everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against the flu to protect themselves and those around them. Vaccination of pregnant women also helps to protect infants too young to be vaccinated. Residents are encouraged to talk with their healthcare provider for more information on vaccine availability and eligibility.

Although measles was eliminated in the U.S., cases and outbreaks are happening around the country, including California, mostly in unvaccinated people and communities. Measles spreads easily through the air and can cause serious illness, but it’s preventable with the MMR vaccine, which offers 97% protection after 2 doses.
