-You brought me forth from the womb;
-You made me trust at my mother’s breast.
-From birth I was cast upon You;
-from my mother’s womb You have been my God.
Psalm 22:9-10

Just pondering this beautiful reality today as we are approaching our 5th due date and preparing to welcome the next addition to our family. Birth and postpartum is not simply a physical experience. We as humans are Spirit, Soul, and Body! What an amazingly treasured time of transition this!!

This reality is echoed in all areas of wholistic medical practice. Erikson's stages of psychological development identify the immediate postpartum period of a child's life as culminating in the tension between trust vs. mistrust.

We can't pass on to our children what we ourselves don't have to give though...so hear me as I walk this season alongside you: TRUST your body and the processes that developed your beautiful child. TRUST your ability to embrace, struggle, and ultimately enjoy your laboring process. TRUST your ability in providing for this child on the outside just as beautifully as you have while they were on the inside. TRUST God to lead you in this journey of trusting just as He will lead your child!!

As a family-run business, Peace to Progress has made the decision to drastically decrease its social media presence and activity. We do plan to put some of the extra time into developing our own website at peacetoprogress.com and hope that you will check out the resources we begin building out there.

Milly is still active in the north east Ohio birth community, teaches virtual classes, and is expanding her doula training and equipping resources. Feel free to contact her at peacetoprogress@gmail.com

Blueprint Based Birth: Building a Foundation

This class is now available on youtube for free! If anyone (or someone you know) would be interested in some amazing information from two seasons birth instructors please have them contact me. The video is currently "private," but I am more than happy to make is available on request.

The building a foundation class is the first in our 7-week comprehensive birth course. It proves information about what barriers to a smooth foundation you might find from the history of birth, how to build with the end goal in mind, and foundations for nurturing both yourself and your baby during pregnancy both physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

As a doula that supports freebirths and a childbirth educators who is passionate about equipping those who choose to birth unassisted, I know the beauty that can be found in a birth where these walls are utilized properly. BUT mommas, hear us out as you journey forward on your path of restoration:

Sis, the inability to receive support from others is a trauma response.

Your “I don’t need anyone, I’ll just do it all myself” conditioning is a survival tactic. You needed it to shield your tender heart from abuse, neglect, betrayal, and disappointment from those who could not or would not be there for you.

From the parent who was absent by choice or by the circumstance of working three jobs to feed and house you.

From the lovers who offered sexual intimacy but no offered no safe haven that honored your heart.

From the friendships that always took more than they gave.

From all the situations when someone told you “we’re in this together” then abandoned you, leaving you to pick up the pieces when isht got real, leaving you to handle your part and their part, too.

From the lies. The betrayals.

You learned along the way that you just couldn’t really trust people. Or that you could trust people, but only up to a certain point.

Ultra-independence is a *trust issue.*

You learned: if I don’t put myself in a situation where I rely on someone, I won’t have to be disappointed when they don’t show up for me, or when they drop the ball... because they will always drop the ball sooner or later, right?

You may even have been intentionally taught this protection strategy by generations of hurt women who came before you.

Ultra-independence is a preemptive strike against heartbreak.

So, you don’t trust anyone.

And you don’t trust yourself, either, to choose people.

To trust is to hope, to trust is vulnerability.

“Never again,” you vowed.

But no matter how you dress it up and display it proudly to make it seem like this level of independence is what you always wanted to be, in truth it’s your wounded, scarred, broken heart behind a protective brick wall.

Impenetrable. Nothing gets in. No hurt gets in. But no love gets in either.

Fortresses and armor are for those in battle, or who believe the battle is coming.

It’s trauma response.

The good news is trauma that is acknowledged is trauma that can be healed.

You are worthy of having support.
You are worthy of having true partnership.
You are worthy of love.
You are worthy of having your heart held.
You are worthy to be adored.
You are worthy to be cherished.

You are worthy to have someone say, “You rest. I got this.” And actually deliver on that promise.

You are worthy to receive.
You are worthy to receive.
You are worthy to receive.
You are worthy.
Worthy, sis.
You are worthy.

You don’t have to earn it.
You don’t have to prove it.
You don’t have to bargain for it.
You don’t have to beg for it.

You are worthy.
Worthy.

Simply because you exist.

I love you.

Inspired to Serve

As wonderful as my nursing education and labor and delivery floor experience were, I've learned the most through the births of each of my three children. Their stories also provide a good platform to share how some of my beliefs about birth have developed.

My first birth:

Eve Marielle transitioned me from nurse to mother in 2014. While I had already coached many others through that journey, what an experience it was to walk it myself! Her labor and delivery could be simply explained as "Textbook," but the nitty gritty reality of each passing contraction brought a whole new level of understanding to the process.

I could not have felt more ready for her arrival as I bustled through the week of her due date. Feeling disproportioned as only a full term momma can, I decided to get a chiropractic adjustment on my due date--a Friday--and scheduled a prenatal massage for the next day. My husband worked Tuesday through Saturday at the time and I figured getting everything in line to welcome her Saturday night would make for delightful timing. Naive as this part of my birth plan was...we were blessed enough to have it work out right on queue. This was the beginning of what has since become one of my general labor tips: Prenatal chiropractic and massage care is a wonderful tool for helping your body prepare for delivery.
