I am here not because I am ok, but I am trying to be "ok" in a world that isn't. Family, friends, strangers near and far are suffering and dying.I will not debate, only delete any harmful actions and responses to this post. I decide!
In my experience the culture of silence only protects violence and perpetrators of abuse/violence. Silence is meant to keep the victim small and afraid to speak out and act. Silence bolsters the ego of the one standing over me with a clenched fist. The time for silence is no more.
And I get it - fear is real. But fear "is an object to be observed, not a force that defines you." - Michael Singer.
Silence is a choice that speaks volumes and our friends and neighbors need us all to stand up, blow the whistle and engage in non-violent resistance.
The ethical principle of non-harming (Ahimsa) can be how we move forward. Addressing violence through community - based justice, advocacy against systemic harm, peacefully protesting against injustice. Passive non-action harms yourself and others, so I will offer you 5 ways that every American can help stop ICE.
Now Pick 3.
1. Call your law-makers 5calls.org ( it matters!)
2. Boycott these companies: Home Depot, Amazon, Target, Whole Foods, Hilton Hotels (the list is long - start here)
3. Prepare your community: Know your rights and make a safety plan. immigrantjustice.org
4. Make Recurring Donations: Fund the lawyers fighting ICE legally:$5-10/mo.
Impact Fund (Fund Immigrant Rights Portfolio)
National Immigrant Justice Center
Immigrant Defense Project
5. Share these ideas with your friends and family.
Share these ideas, not for me but for yourself and those you care about. Share these ideas , not for me but for those you don't know who are facing a very uncertain future. Share these ideas for Renee Good, Liam Ramos, Alex Pretti and the countless others who have been victims and continue to be victimized by ICE.
"In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
