Ice Safety Information and our preparations for Sturgeon Spearing/Battle-on-Bago.
We’re gearing up for sturgeon spearing and Battle on Bago—and we want everyone to enjoy a safe season on the ice.
Our crews have been training since early December, starting with shore-based ice rescue. From late December through mid-January, we trained on the new 1000 Island Ice Boat. This week, we’re conducting ice dive training to be ready for emergencies on the ice.
Why it matters: Over the past 3 years, B15 has handled 96 calls for service (an average of 32 calls per year). In 2025 alone, we responded to 41 calls. On average, our teams assist 7–9 people out of the water each year.
Before you head out:
• No ice is 100% safe—conditions can change quickly.
• Check ice conditions often, especially near current, pressure cracks, bridges, and shorelines.
• Let someone know your plan and bring safety gear (ice picks, rope/throw bag, life jacket, and a charged phone in a waterproof case).

***Reminder for fish shacks/ice shanties: When you move your ice shacks, all holes must be clearly marked for the safety of first responders and the public.
