As we wrap up National Volunteer Week, we are taking a moment to celebrate the incredible impact of our volunteers. Every day, volunteers help turn the Y into more than just a building. They create a place where people can grow, connect, and truly belong. Through their kindness, encouragement, and everyday moments, volunteers help others feel seen, supported, and valued in ways that matter.

Lead aprons aren’t totally gone—but here’s why you don’t always see them anymore 👇 Modern X-rays are way more precise than they used to be. Machines now use lower radiation doses and focus only on the exact area needed, so there’s minimal scatter to the rest of your body. Plus, studies have shown that lead aprons don’t really add meaningful protection in most routine X-rays—and sometimes they can actually interfere with the image or cause retakes (which = more radiation, not less). So skipping the apron isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about using better tech, safer practices, and avoiding unnecessary exposure 💡
And if it makes you more comfortable, you can always request a lead apron—we’re happy to use one 😊
