Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) is a Twelve Step, Twelve Tradition program of men and women who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional homes. The ACA program was founded on the belief that family dysfunction is a disease that infected us as children and affects us as adults. Our membership also includes adults from homes where alcohol or drugs were not present; however, abuse, neglect or unhealthy behavior was. We meet to share our experience and recovery in an atmosphere of mutual respect. We discover how alcoholism and other family dysfunction affected us in the past and how it influences us in the present. We begin to see the unhealthy elements of our childhood. By practicing the Twelve Steps, focusing on the ACA Solution, and accepting a loving Higher Power of our own understanding, we find freedom.

NEEDS

I AM THE ONLY EXPERT ON WHAT I NEED

I base my decisions on my needs today. I am learning to be sensitive to the changes I’m going through in recovery. I’m learning to be flexible with my new needs and patterns. What was appropriate for me yesterday may no longer work in my life now. I feel free to experiment with new styles of behaving, thinking and feelings. The changes I am going through may not be permanent. I know only that if these changes are helpful now, I will use them. As I learn about myself, I test and question my old patterns, my old values. I evaluate what feels good and what does not. Since I am the only expert on what feels good to me, I will base my decisions on my needs. Today I treat myself with kindness and patience.

PLAY

TODAY I COAX THE CHILD OUT OF MY SOUL

I take delight in play today, knowing that I have a right to pursue pleasurable activities. I deserve to enjoy myself in a non-destructive way. I will no longer become so focused on outside activities that I ignore my own need for fun and laughter. I will not be over-responsible for others and under-responsible for myself. I can play and have fun without becoming overwhelmed with guilt or anxiety. I can pursue people and situations where I can coax the delightful “child” out of my soul. Today I will separate myself from my responsibilities and know that I am not defined only by what I do. Today I invite my child to play. Whether outrageous, adorable, nasty or naughty. I bless my child self and give it love.

Emotional Sobriety

"A long-time member of our program, when she was new in recovery, said she felt liberated when her sponsor told her she ‘could walk away from crazy.'" BRB p. 628
It used to be anything goes in our dysfunctional families. We learned from our parents that it was okay to call each other names and to manipulate through hurtful sarcasm. We didn't learn how to praise each other for our talents or to nurture each other through love and kindness.
No wonder emotional sobriety is such a puzzling term when we finally read about it in the Big Red Book. If we work our ACA program by getting a sponsor, working the Steps, and doing service work, life opens up. We can begin to experience what the program promises: peace and serenity. The dysfunctional situations we've lived through can be likened to watching water drain in the bathtub - there's a whirlpool at the end. In recovery we learn to identify reoccurring situations that pull us into the current of chaos and keep us stuck. We begin to step away from caustic situations and avoid being sucked back into insanity. We start to make better choices and learn to walk away from "crazy."
On this day I practice emotional sobriety and let go of trying to change other people and things. I remain centered in the peacefulness of my ACA program.

CALMNESS

I STILL MY THOUGHTS AND SEARCH FOR THAT QUIET PLACE WITHIN ME

At this moment I still the anxieties of my hurried thinking and center on that quiet place within me. In this quiet place, great spiritual ideas are revealed. I accept them and follow through on them. I take this moment to rest from my usual concerns and take a deep breath and fill my spirit with peace. For the moment, I relax from all fear, worry, and doubt. In this calm peace, I find a healing power that sets my consciousness free to create positive beliefs and feelings. This calmness will prevail throughout my day. I begin this day knowing that all negative interference in my thoughts is dissolved. I am at one with the love of God and this love will spill over into my relationships, my business affairs, my health and my well-being.
