Two days.

That’s it. Two days until the We ❤️ You: Recovery in Our Community Event!

Right now the feeling is a mix of excited, anxious, and completely ready for fun all wrapped into one. The kind of nerves that mean something important is about to happen. The kind of energy that tells you this is going to matter. 🫶

If you signed up, you should receive an email this morning with all the details about the day, including food, parking, CME information, and how you can pay compassion forward. Check your inbox and give it a quick read so you’re ready to roll.

We truly believe this is going to be inspiring, meaningful, and maybe even life changing. Most of all, it’s going to be powerful simply because we’ll be together.

Cannot wait to see this community in one room. ❤️

🚒🤝 Partnership in Action 🤝🚒

Nova Counseling Services would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the incredible men and women of the Milwaukee Fire Department for their continued partnership and commitment to serving our community.

Recently, our Executive Director, Patrick Drury, had the privilege of participating in a ride-along with their MORI Team (Milwaukee Overdose Response Initiative). The MORI Team is a specialized response unit that follows up after overdose incidents to provide immediate outreach, support, and connection to treatment resources. Rather than simply responding in the moment of crisis, this team works proactively to bridge individuals and families to recovery services — offering hope, guidance, and real pathways forward.

Seeing this work firsthand reinforces what we believe at Nova: recovery happens through collaboration. When first responders and treatment providers stand shoulder to shoulder, lives are not only saved — they are transformed. 💙

We are honored to partner with a department that leads with both strength and compassion. Together, we will continue building safer communities and stronger recovery networks. 🔥

"You Want Me to Stay How Many More Days?!”

If you’re a few days into treatment and already thinking, “I’m good now, I don’t need all this,” you’re not alone.

Around day five, something interesting often happens. The fog starts to lift. Your body feels better. Sleep improves. The chaos slows down. And suddenly the thought creeps in:

“Maybe I just needed to dry out.”
“I can go home and control it.”
“I’m not like everyone else here.”

That voice is familiar and convincing. The problem? It’s the same thinking that brought most people to treatment in the first place.

The first 30 days of treatment are about stabilization. You’re getting physically healthy, emotionally regulated, and mentally clear enough to start seeing the truth about your substance use. This is where you begin to recognize powerlessness, unmanageability, and how denial has shaped your decisions. What hasn’t happened yet is learning how to live differently. Insight alone doesn’t keep people sober. Structure does. Accountability does. Connection does. And those things take time.

That’s why Nova offers the Terra transitional treatment program, continued care beyond the initial 30 days. Transitional treatment gives you the space to practice recovery instead of just talking about it. Over the 90 days, clients:

Work with a sponsor
Attend daily meetings
Begin 12-Step work
Build routines and follow-through
Learn how to show up on time, keep commitments, and rebuild integrity

This is where recovery moves from theory to real life. You’re not just learning what needs to change…you’re learning how to change it, one day at a time, with support.

Staying longer doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’re giving yourself a real chance.
Most people didn’t lose control overnight and they don’t rebuild their lives in 30 days either. Growth happens when ego takes a back seat and you allow structure, accountability, and help to do their job.

As one graduate put it:

“Transitional treatment is where the real work started for me. I found happiness and life no longer felt impossible. When I set my ego aside and let help, help I started to get better.”

If you’re feeling resistant, frustrated, or ready to leave early, that’s normal. But feelings aren’t facts, and clarity doesn’t equal recovery. Staying longer isn’t about giving up your freedom. It’s about giving yourself a foundation strong enough to keep it.

✨ New Blog Post Alert! ✨

Take a look at our latest blog post — The Power of Surrender: Redefining Strength in Recovery, written by our Clinical Director. 🧠💬

It does a beautiful job of capturing the paradox of surrender as individuals begin their recovery journey — showing how strength and letting go go hand-in-hand. 💪🕊️

In the journey of recovery, few concepts are as misunderstood—and as powerful—as surrender. At first glance, surrender can sound like weakness, failure, or giving up. In reality, it represents one of the most courageous and transformative acts a person can take on the path to healing. Surrender is a paradox. It is not about admitting defeat, but about releasing a fight that was never meant to be won alone. For many struggling with addiction, life becomes an exhausting cycle of control, resistance, and self-reliance fueled by ego and fear. The belief that “I should be able to manage this myself” often keeps people trapped in isolation and shame. Surrender invites a different approach—one rooted in honesty, humility, and hope.

At its core, surrender means letting go of the illusion of control. Addiction thrives in secrecy and self-will, convincing individuals they can outthink, outmaneuver, or outlast the problem. Over time, this battle becomes draining and futile. Surrender breaks that cycle. By giving over the struggle to something greater than ourselves—whether that is a support system, a recovery community, a higher power, or professional treatment—space is created for relief. The burden no longer has to be carried alone. In that space, help can be accepted, guidance can be heard, and healthier strategies can take root.

This shift doesn’t diminish strength; it redefines it.

True strength in recovery is not found in fighting harder, but in choosing a new way forward. Surrender transforms the “white flag of defeat” into a banner of hope. It marks the moment when a person stops surviving and begins healing. Through surrender, individuals gain access to tools, connection, and accountability—elements that addiction systematically strips away. The walls built to protect oneself begin to come down, making room for trust, growth, and self-compassion. What once felt like weakness becomes the foundation for lasting resilience.

Choosing surrender is choosing life. It is an act of faith in the possibility of change and a declaration that help is not only needed—but deserved. In recovery, surrender is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of a stronger, freer, and more authentic way of living.

If you or someone you love is struggling, know this: surrender is not giving up. It is stepping into hope.

While our primary focus is serving clients here at Nova, we are also passionate about supporting impacted family members. Please read our latest blog, written by clinical team member Sadie:

Addiction rarely affects just one person. While it may show up most visibly in the life of the individual struggling with substances or compulsive behaviors, its impact quietly spreads through the entire family. Homes shaped by addiction often become places of unpredictability—where love exists alongside fear, hope alongside disappointment, and loyalty alongside deep emotional pain. Over time, family members may find themselves changing who they are in order to survive the chaos, often without realizing it.
Addiction is increasingly understood as a family disease, not because families cause it, but because everyone in the household adapts to it. Spouses learn to manage crises, children learn to read moods and walk on eggshells, and parents may carry overwhelming guilt or responsibility. These patterns can become so familiar that they feel normal, even as they quietly erode emotional health, trust, and connection.

For many families, silence becomes a coping strategy. Addiction is hidden, minimized, or explained away in an effort to protect appearances or avoid conflict. Yet this silence often deepens isolation and shame, leaving family members feeling alone in experiences that are, unfortunately, very common. The truth is, millions of families are navigating similar struggles, asking the same questions, and carrying the same unspoken grief.

This blog is written for those families. Whether you love someone who is actively using, in recovery, or not ready for help, your experience matters. Understanding how addiction affects the family system is a powerful first step toward healing—not just for the person with the addiction, but for everyone involved. While addiction can fracture relationships, it does not have to define them. With education, support, and compassion, families can begin to reclaim stability, boundaries, and hope.
