I often get questions related to presbyopia - or lack of focusing. People will ask me things such as, "if I wear reading glasses will my eyes become dependent on them?" , "Are there exercises I can do to strengthen my eyes so I don't need reading glasses?", "My vision seems worse after I wear my glasses, are the reading glasses hurting my eyes, or worsening my vision?"
All of these are valid and common questions so I wanted to address them, in order to shed some light on presbyopia.
Presbyopia is the eye's inability to focus like it used to. The part of the eye that does the focusing is the lens (located behind the pupil). This lens bends with the help of muscles in the eye. The bending of the lens helps us focus on things that we look at within 22" or "near" (books, magazines, phones, bills, computer, art projects, tablets, etc). This lens grows from before you're born until it hardens and becomes a cataract, later in life. As it's a small structure, it has little space to fit all these new, growing cells. So, at around 40 years of age, this little lens starts to harden. It becomes harder to focus. You can still focus it occasionally and it's usually easier in the morning than the evening. So when you put on reading glasses that relaxes those muscles and allows the glasses to help the focusing.
Since clear vision with eyeglasses is preferable to uncorrected vision, you may find that you want to wear your glasses more often. Although it may feel as if you are becoming dependent on your glasses, you are actually just getting used to seeing clearly.
Whether you wear reading glasses or not, you aren't changing what is physiologically happening inside your eye. That lens will harden, it will be increasingly harder to focus and eventually you will NEED correction to help you see near things. Not wearing the reading glasses/bifocals/needed prescription can lead to headaches and a lot of strain.
I hope this answers some questions. Feel free to ask any related questions for more clarity or discussion.
Thank you for your time!
