There is a bill moving through the Iowa Legislature right now (SF-2455) that could affect ambulance services, especially in rural communities like ours.
🚑 What’s the issue?
It costs ambulance services much more to respond to a 911 call than what they are paid.
• It costs about $2,600+ to provide an ambulance transport
• Services are paid about $1,100 on average
• That’s a loss of about $1,500 every call
This bill would base payments on rates that are still below the true cost of providing care.
⚠️ Why does that matter to you?
If ambulance services continue to lose money on every call, it can lead to:
• Fewer ambulances available
• Longer wait times when you call 911
• More reliance on local taxes
• In some cases, loss of ambulance service in rural areas
❤️ Our perspective:
We believe patients should be protected from large, unexpected medical bills. No one should be financially devastated after calling 911.
However, this approach shifts the problem onto EMS services that are already struggling, and that can directly impact the level of service available to our communities.
📣 What can you do?
We encourage you to contact your state legislators and share your thoughts. EMS is a critical service, and your voice matters.
