Nail fungus is one of the hardest things to treat because it is in the root of the nail itself underneath the skin. Topical medication rarely is helpful, long-term oral medication is potentially dangerous and has to go through the liver. We have new treatment options that utilize a laser that treats the nail fungus within the nail and root. It's generally a highly successful treatment that generally takes 9 to 12 months because that is the growth cycle of the nail to completely grow out. If you're experiencing heel pain it's important to make sure you wear shoes to cushion the heel first thing in the morning. Sometimes a shoe with a slight heel can reduce the discomfort, for women it's a slight wedge type shoe for men generally cowboy boots help. Stretching and assisting in reducing heel discomfort also. If these treatments are not successful then we can treat the pain and inflammation with an injection of a low-grade steroid-type medication and possibly orthotics if necessary. Heel pain with plantar fasciitis is one of the most common problems we see in our office. The plantar fascia pulls off of the heel bone causing inflammation and possibly a bone spur. Pain occurs normally in the morning and after sitting or driving for a period of time. When traditional OTC treatments are unsuccessful we are able to significantly improve and reduce pain by a combination of a injections which is minimally painful with a low-grade steroid type injection from the side of the heel and custom-made orthotics.
