Two years ago, Shanna lost her husband to cancer. Supporting him throughout the experience taught her the emotional and physical toll that an illness takes on the patient and their family.

As a medical assistant at Saint Luke's, Shana has the opportunity to meet other cancer patients on a regular basis. Whenever she meets a patient going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment, she gives them a heart-shaped stone as a symbol of kindness.

"Helping others gives me a sense of purpose," said Shanna. "Offering these hearts has brought comfort to me, too."

Shana was inspired by a social media video showing someone handing out heart-shaped stones to strangers to remind them that one simple act of kindness can make a huge difference. She ordered her own stones and gives them to cancer patients to let them know that they are in her thoughts. Patients have told Shanna that they carry the stones with them everywhere they go.

"Even small acts of compassion can have a lasting impact," said Shana. "It feels good to know I can brighten someone's day in a small, but meaningful way."

Every heart-shaped stone is more than a gesture—it's a symbol of empathy and hope. Thank you, Shanna, for your thoughtfulness and kindness. 🩶

Dr. Salil Kulkarni and his team at Saint Luke’s Pulmonology Specialists use a robotic bronchoscope to look inside patients’ lungs and check for cancer.

A bronchoscope is a device that allows doctors to examine the airways. A robotic bronchoscope, however, gives the physician enhanced precision and reach. When a CT scan shows that a patient has a lung lesion, Dr. Kulkarni uses the robotic bronchoscope to carefully guide a thin tube deep into the lungs, locate the lesion, and take a tissue sample for biopsy. The CT scan acts as a road map, so they know exactly where to look.

Lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer. More than 80% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. The easiest way to prevent lung cancer is simply not to smoke. 🚭

After years of struggling with her weight, Bonnie reached a turning point in the spring of 2022. During a routine appointment to address ongoing blood pressure, cholesterol, and thyroid challenges, she realized it was time to seek additional support. She asked her doctor for help finding a weight-loss specialist.

Her doctor referred her to Dr. Geoffrey Slayden with Saint Luke's Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Saint Luke's South Hospital, where Bonnie’s journey began. From her very first visit, she was met with a supportive team, which included everyone from her surgeon and nurses to nutrition and fitness experts, who guided her through every step of the process.

Three years later, Bonnie has lost more than 160 pounds. Bonnie and Dr. Slayden recently joined FOX4 News Kansas City and KSHB 41 to share her story: https://heyor.ca/LAfRH7

During a 2023 checkup at Saint Luke’s Primary Care in Lee’s Summit, Bill’s nurse practitioner suggested he get a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening based on his smoking history to rule out the possibility of cancer.

“I was surprised the nurse suggested the scan,” Bill says. “She knew the latest guidelines for lung cancer screening, so I was fortunate for her. I’d say she saved my life.”

While Bill no longer smokes, his 40 years of smoking made him an ideal candidate for the non-invasive LDCT scan. The screening, which is more detailed than a standard X-ray, can find cancer in its infancy when it is easiest to remove.

The scan revealed a small growth on Bill’s left lung, which led to further tests with Dr. Vincent Lem, a pulmonary specialist at Saint Luke's Cancer Institute, who recommended a biopsy. The biopsy results confirmed the presence of cancer.

Led by Dr. Michael Gibson, a cardiothoracic surgeon, Bill’s surgical team performed a robotic left upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection, which removed the affected area of his lung.

“As a practice, we prefer to perform all lung cancer surgeries from a robotic, minimally invasive platform,” Dr. Gibson says. “We've done almost 2,000 surgeries combined between three surgeons, which helps us treat patients while shortening their hospital stays, resulting in fewer complications.”

The procedure was a success, and Bill did not require additional treatments, such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

Now two years removed from the surgery, Bill undergoes follow-up CT scans and X-rays every six months at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City to monitor his condition.

Former patients at Saint Luke's Rehabilitation Institute reunited with the caregivers who helped them regain their strength and independence at the annual Rehab Reunion. Of course, Henli the facility dog was there, too!

Joe is one of the patients who reunited with the care team that helped him recover from a spinal infection and injury that affected his mobility. He was worried he may never walk again. Now, he can walk unassisted.

"Never give up. Always look forward and try to do your best," said Joe. "Even if you don't think it's your best, it is your best for that day."
