Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

Welcome to the Herd!

Have you seen this beauty around the barn? Meet Lightning, our 2007 Missouri Fox Trotter. She's a gorgeous white overo—and HTR’s only gaited horse!

A gaited horse is a horse that naturally performs smooth, four-beat movements instead of the typical trot. This means that Lightning does the breed’s signature “fox trot”—a special gait where the front end walks and the back end trots, making the trot extremely smooth!

💔 Heartland has sad news to share.

We are deeply saddened to announce that one of our beloved ponies, Taco, has passed away. Taco was well-known at Heartland for his s***k and spirited personality. Even at the age of 22, he could often be found in the pasture running, playing, and—true to form—getting himself and his herd mates into mischief.

In his work, Taco was often paired with our youngest and most delicate riders. His adorable teddy bear looks, and fuzzy, warm coat always won their hearts quickly. While we grieve this loss, we are also deeply grateful for the three years of joy he brought to our barn. Run free, Taco. 🌈

Horse Spotlight!

Meet Lizzie 💕 Our beautiful gray Quarter Horse mare joined Heartland in 2020 and has been stealing hearts ever since! Born in 2005, this sweet girl once trekked across the entire state of Kansas as a trail horse — talk about adventure! We’re so lucky to have her here at HTR. 🐴💫

Make a difference today — support our riders, our horses, and our mission!

At HTR, it costs nearly $250 to provide just one ride. Your gift helps us maintain our facility, feed our horses, and provide adaptive riding, occupational therapy, and equine-assisted interventions for people of all abilities with minimal fees.

Here are ways you can support HTR:

*One-Time Donation*: Make a single contribution that directly supports our operating costs and keeps everything running smoothly.

*Monthly Giving*: Commit to a small automatic gift (as little as $15/month) and become a steady part of our team — that kind of reliable support makes a huge difference.
*Scholarship Fund*: Donate toward the “Hunter McPhail Scholarship Fund” to help ensure that no willing participant is turned away due to cost. A gift of $45 can sponsor one lesson.
*Horse Sponsorship*: Cover the feed, bedding, veterinary care, and other expenses for one of our beloved therapy horses.
*In-Kind Wish List Gifts*: Not everyone gives money—and that’s okay! You can help by donating items from our perpetual wish list: office and cleaning supplies (chairs, copy paper, hand sanitizer, soap, detectors, etc.), gift cards, or hardware store groceries. Even hosting a “donation party” and sending items directly can make a big impact.
*Donor-Advised Funds or Investments*: If you have a donor-advised fund or are looking at larger asset gifts, you can donate from investments and avoid capital gains tax — speak with your advisor about giving through a fund or directly via stock/asset gift.

Your support matters here at Heartland — every ride, every volunteer, every horse, every moment of confidence and connection.

🐴 Is your horse a good fit for HTR? Here’s what we look for in a potential horse:

We’re seeking healthy, sound horses (walk & trot required) aged 6–18 years, with a calm, steady temperament and a “been there, seen that” attitude. Horses must be friendly with people, unphased in new environments, be able to tolerate unexpected noises and movements, toys and props, and volunteers walking alongside. We also need horses that have experience or willingness to work in indoor and outdoor arenas, trails, group lessons or equine-assisted therapy settings. Any history of lameness, vices (stall weaving, cribbing, bucking, etc.), or behavioral challenges should be disclosed.

Typically, before a potential horse is purchased or donated, the horse undergoes a pre-purchase exam and enters a trial period to ensure compatibility.

If your horse meets these qualities — and you’re open to lease, sale, or donation options — we’d be delighted to see an application via the link!
