Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

Join us in welcoming the newest member of our Heartland herd! 🤎🐴

✨ Meet CBass ✨

This sweet Quarter Horse joined us just before Christmas and has officially entered our Adaptive Riding program this month. CBass previously spent his days taking wonderful care of his young riders. He has a background as a western pleasure horse, which means he is trained to have relaxed movement, good manners, and willingness to respond to light cues.

With his gentle nature and steady experience, he is already proving to be an incredible addition to our herd. We are so excited for the many riders he’ll help and the smiles he’ll bring! 💫

To our incredible volunteers 🤍

Thank you for showing up week after week with servant hearts and steady hands. Because of you, our riders feel safe, supported, and empowered every time they come to the barn. From leading horses and side walking to grooming, tacking, and doing all the behind-the-scenes work — you are the heartbeat of our program.

You make confidence grow, smiles bigger, and milestones possible. We truly could not do this without you.

Thank you for giving your time, your energy, and your compassion to our riders and horses. We are so grateful for each and every one of you. 🐴✨

Educational Wednesdays: What goes into obtaining a Therapeutic Riding Instructor Certification?

Therapeutic riding instructors must complete extensive training to become certified. This includes hands-on teaching hours, in-depth education on horse behavior and care, adaptive riding techniques, and working with riders who have physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities. Instructors must also pass written and riding exams, demonstrate safe horse handling, and maintain current CPR and first aid certifications. Ongoing continuing education is required to stay certified and up to date with best practices.

Comment 👏👏👏 if you love our Instructors here at HTR!
