In partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), January is designated as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month with a purpose to provide fire fighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to offer support to those with a cancer diagnosis. This is a critical focus as occupational cancers are the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service.

More patients are finding it helpful to have access to their health care provider's electronic clinical notes, which summarize the information from medical visits. Also known as "open notes," these may include test results, diagnoses details and treatment options. Many cancer centers are making the notes and test results available to patients through the electronic health portal. Ask for details about how to access this information.

These volunteers can truly understand what living with cancer is like, and they have a lot of wisdom to share from their experiences. Patient Resource offers a mentor service to match patients with someone who survived the same type of cancer. Go to https://www.patientresource.com/Patient_Matching_Service

Advances in early detection, innovations in treatment options and improvements in side effect management can be credited with the increasing number of survivors. Although life after cancer may look different than the one before treatment, it can be very positive with the right approach.
