Originally started in 1996 as Kick Butts Day, Take Down To***co Day of Action is an effort to encourage children to become to***co-free. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer and contributes to many other cancers as well. Awareness events are planned all across the country where thousands of youth advocates will push toward a healthier, more equitable future. The kids are joined by their parents, teachers, loved ones and other interested parties as they pursue their goal of encouraging peers to not use to***co in any form.

Today, March 30, is National Doctors' Day! Physicians play a pivotal role in safeguarding and improving the well-being of people with cancer. March 30 is a day to recognize the tireless efforts of physicians. Patient Resource would like to offer our appreciation to the esteemed group of doctors who review our content and guide our publications. Led by Dr. Charles M. Balch (pictured), our Medical Advisory Board joins us in championing patients and offering the education they need. We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to express gratitude to the doctors in your lives who impact the care of yourself and your loved ones.

March is National Nutrition Month! Each March everyone is reminded to focus on healthy eating and ensure their daily routine includes physical activity. This year's theme is, "Discover the Power of Nutrition," which is especially important for people facing a cancer diagnosis. Research shows that good nutrition and the extra energy it provides helps people being treated for cancer to recover better and more quickly from some treatments. A referral to a dietitian may be helpful to determine the best foods to eat before, during and after treatment.

Certain types of cancers tend to develop more often in children. The most commonly diagnosed kidney cancer in children is called a Wilms tumor. Clusters of immature cells may form in the kidneys of a baby at birth. Normally, these cells mature in a few years, but in some cases, they may grow out of control, forming a mass of immature cells that become a Wilms tumor. It is always malignant, and it can be found in one or both kidneys. Current research and advances are dramatically improving the way childhood cancer is being treated, making it important to connect with experienced experts in treating this type of tumor.

March 21st is A**l Cancer Awareness Day! Because it is a fairly rare cancer, few people know much about a**l cancer. Each year on March 21, a**l cancer survivors, supporters, caregivers and advocates focus on educating and raising awareness about it. A**l cancer begins when cancerous cells form a tumor in the tissues of the a**s. Because the majority of these diagnoses are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), people are encouraged to ask their doctor about preventive screenings and other ways to prevent infection.

March is National Nutrition Month! Each March everyone is reminded to focus on healthy eating and ensure their daily routine includes physical activity. The stress of cancer, both physical and emotional, makes nutrition especially important when undergoing cancer treatment. Research shows that good nutrition and the extra energy it provides, helps people being treated for cancer to recover better and more quickly from some treatments. A referral to a dietitian may be helpful to determine the best foods to eat before, during and after treatment.

March is Kidney Cancer Awareness Month! The kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organs located in the back of the abdomen, are part of the urinary tract. All of the blood in the body passes through the kidneys many times each day, and their main function is to filter the blood. They also filter out excess water, salt and waste products. The result of this filtering process is urine, which then travels to the bladder, where it is stored until urination. Today we focus on the importance of your kidneys, and throughout March, during Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, everyone is encouraged to learn about strategies for both preventing and managing kidney cancer.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Every March, the purpose behind National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is to bring attention to the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and women. Although it's been most common in older adults, younger people are now being diagnosed more frequently. In fact, the recommended minimum age for screening is now 45. Colorectal cancer can develop in the inner lining of the colon or the re**um. Everyone is encouraged to learn more about this disease and how to get screened. If you are putting off having a colonoscopy because of fear or embarrassment, know that it is safe to schedule and undergo the procedure. And, it's worth it.

Immunotherapy is one of the newest types of treatments approved for some types of cancer. It is uniquely positioned to defeat cancer because it uses the body's natural immune system to target only cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone. Another advantage of using immunotherapy is its effectiveness at treating cancers that are resistant to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Ask your health care provider if testing is available to determine whether you may be a candidate for immunotherapy.

Today is World Lymphedema Day, a global event that focuses on raising awareness about lymphedema and lymphatic diseases. Lymphedema occurs when lymph, a clear fluid that carries cells to fight infection, cannot flow normally through lymph vessels because of damage to lymph nodes or vessels or the removal of lymph nodes. This is often a side effect of some cancer treatments, including surgery and radiation therapy. Patients, caregivers, health care professionals, researchers, pharmaceutical companies and public health authorities are encouraged to bring awareness to this condition to help find more ways to manage it successfully.

March 4 is International HPV Awareness Day! The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States, and having it can lead to cancer. Nine strains of HPV are known to cause cancer and it is linked to approximately 70 percent of oropharyngeal cancers, which occur in the middle part of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils. HPV is also linked to a**l, cervical, pe**le, vaginal and vulvar cancers. Educating people about HPV is the first step toward reducing their risk. Vaccines are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for children as well as men and women in certain age groups.
