November is National Marrow Awareness Month! About 70 percent of people who need a bone marrow transplant do not have a matched donor in their family. Throughout November, people are encouraged to learn more about joining registries to donate their stem cells and bone marrow to help others. Minority donors are especially needed. Donors between the ages of 18 and 35 are also in high demand because research shows younger donors offer the best chance at a successful transplant.

It is also an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Today, October 13, is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Metastatic disease is classified as Stage IV and indicates that cancerous cells have metastasized (spread) beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to distant sites in the body, most commonly, the bones, lungs, liver or brain. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been recognized since 1985, it wasn't until 2009 that this day was officially declared to recognize those facing a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. The goal is to raise the public's awareness of the challenges faced by people living with Stage IV breast cancer.
