“Ashley’s leadership — often quiet but always powerful — keeps our daily operations running smoothly. She seamlessly manages her own significant caseload while providing the organizational backbone and positive spirit that keeps us all going. Ashley is a truly phenomenal clinician. Her skill with all patients is clear, but her work with our pediatric patients is truly exceptional. She goes above and beyond for these families, providing the specialized care, patience, and warmth needed for the youngest individuals to thrive.” — Bea W., Referral Coordinator

We celebrate Ashley S., MA CCC-SLP, for embodying the very best of our profession. Her commitment, compassion, and quiet strength make her not just a valued colleague, but the heart of our team.

This ✨FEES Friday✨ we're exploring the significance of pooled secretions.
The New Zealand Secretion Scale (NZSS) is a gamechanger for predicting pneumonia risk—and here's why it matters:

Unlike other secretion scales, NZSS measures:
✅ Location (where are they pooling?)
✅ Amount (how much?)
✅ Response (can the patient clear them?)
🧠 NPO status doesn't remove all aspiration risks (patients can still aspirate accumulated secretions)!
🧠 Normal airway responses to pooled secretions in the pharynx or larynx may include spontaneous coughing, throat clearing, and/or swallowing

🎯 High NZSS score? Identify WHY
If patients have suspected primary sensory deficits (i.e., if the patient is not demonstrating normal airway responses to pooled secretions) → consider cold/sour/carbonated stimulation, ice chips

If patients have suspected primary motor deficits → consider strengthening exercises

🎯Many cases may call for addressing BOTH sensory and motor swallowing function!

“Recovery after a hospital stay — and not always being able to go home right away — is often hard and sad. Being able to bring some normalcy back into a client’s day by upgrading their diets helps both their physical and mental health. Just today, I had two diet upgrades. One patient and his family cried happy tears! It’s incredibly rewarding being able to brighten a person’s day through our work.” - Samantha F., M.S., CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

At Patheous Health, we’re grateful for colleagues who remind us that every diet upgrade is more than a clinical milestone — it’s a moment of hope.

Understanding Dysphagia Starts with Awareness
Dysphagia is more than “trouble swallowing.” It’s a complex condition that affects 1 in 25 adults annually—and prevalence is even higher in the populations we serve: up to 30% of older adults in inpatient care and 68% of long-term care residents experience dysphagia.

Many SNF-based SLPs initiate referrals based on oropharyngeal concerns, making early recognition and bedside diagnostics essential to timely care.

Swipe through to learn the signs, symptoms, and impact—and explore how mobile diagnostics bring answers to the bedside, guiding safer, faster care.

✨ FEES Friday is back! ✨
We’re excited to relaunch our weekly series spotlighting the power of Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) studies in advancing patient care. Just like Modified Mondays, FEES Friday will bring practical insights, clinical pearls, and evidence-based updates to your feed.

This FEES Friday we're diving into swallow initiation zones. Is a swallow trigger automatically delayed because the bolus progressed past the ramus of the mandible? Not necessarily! Watch to learn more and stay tuned for more FEES Friday posts!

Over 21,000 patients received evidence-based dysphagia diagnostics from Patheous in 2025.

This year, Patheous SLPs performed over 21,000 instrumental swallow studies (FEES and MBS) across healthcare facilities nationwide- bringing mobile dysphagia diagnostics directly to the patients who need them most.

These are more than just numbers. Behind each study is collaboration with facility SLPs, a commitment to evidence-based practice, and a patient receiving the diagnostic care they deserve.

We’re honored to have served so many patients this year. Here’s to even greater impact in 2026!

⭐ The holidays remind us how much connection matters—whether it’s sharing stories, good food, or a few truly unforgettable ugly sweaters.

For people with dysphagia, feeling included in those moments is everything. The ability to communicate and safely enjoy a favorite meal can be the difference between isolation and belonging. At Patheous Health, we witness those meaningful transformations every day: a first sip of coffee after an injury, laughter around the table, or the confidence to eat without fear.

Our SLPs partner with facility clinicians to provide timely onsite Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) studies. These imaging assessments offer the clarity needed to guide safe, personalized care. By restoring safety and dignity, we help patients reconnect with the meals and moments that matter most.

From all of us at Patheous Health, we wish you a joyful, connected, and hope‑filled holiday season.
