“What can you do to get rid of cellulite?”

Nothing 😭

Cellulite is a structural issue beneath the skin. Fibrous connective bands anchor the skin down while fat pushes up around them, creating dimpling. Genetics, hormones, skin thickness, and aging all contribute. It is extremely common, including in patients who are lean and physically fit.

There are many treatments marketed as cellulite solutions. While some may temporarily soften the appearance in select areas, no procedure has been shown to completely and permanently remove cellulite.

For that reason, we do not recommend treatment solely for the purpose of “getting rid” of cellulite.

As a plastic surgeon with a long career, people sometimes ask what my first case was. It wasn’t cosmetic. It was a complex facial reconstruction after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The operation lasted 40 hours. We reconstructed the skeleton of his face with a free fibula flap, which at the time was still a relatively new microsurgical technique.

Plastic surgery isn’t always aesthetics. Often, it’s high-stakes reconstruction and the meticulous restoration of structure and function.
