Most students come to yoga through asana (physical postures), which is nothing to be ashamed about! But the physical postures just begin to scratch the surface of the deep wisdom that the practice has to offer.
Oh, Wise Yogi offers a powerful, supportive environment for students to begin to learn more about the other eight elements of yoga. These eight elements, or limbs, are yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (physical postures), pranayama (breath restraint), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (consciousness). Oh, Wise Yogi is an environment where students can ask questions, share insights, and explore yogic teachings’ broader implications for life.
In year one, we’ve chosen to move through Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele at the slow pace intended by the author. Yoga began in the East and its foundational texts by Eastern authors should be studied by every serious student. There is also a wealth of contemporary Eastern literature available to deepen your practice. Other contemporary authors from the West have, especially over the last 50 years, begun sharing ideas for students in this hemisphere on how to apply these practices in their own lives. Yamas& Niyamas is often used in Western teacher training, which will assist students in connecting what they experience in their group classes to the inner work elicited by these ancient principles.
In Deborah Adele’s book, each yama and niyama has its own chapter with philosophy woven together with practical examples and stories. Each chapter ends with a list of questions for reflection journaling. Join us each month for a book club unlike any you’ve been to before!
