Statistics indicate that nearly 50% of Americans drink at least one soda a day, and 20% drink 2 or more! We all know that eating too much SUGAR isn’t good for us. But why?

Here are 5 reasons- READ the 5!

1️⃣ Sugar may increase dementia risk:
A large cohort study following 158,000 adults found that people with higher added sugar intake had up to a 43% higher risk of developing dementia, especially when genetic susceptibility was present. Researchers believe high sugar intake contributes to inflammation, insulin resistance, and vascular damage in the brain.

2️⃣ Sugary drinks raise heart disease risk even if you exercise:
A Harvard study found that adding one sugary drink per day was associated with about an 18% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, even among people who met recommended exercise levels.

3️⃣ Sugar fuels fat production in the liver
Recent metabolic research shows fructose triggers “de novo lipogenesis”, meaning the body converts it into fat in the liver more readily than glucose. Sugar intake is strongly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.

4️⃣ High sugar intake is linked to mental health problems:
A 2025 cohort analysis found excessive sugar intake is associated with higher risks of depression, anxiety, and self-harm behaviors, particularly at high intake levels. Another recent analysis found teens consuming high amounts of sugary drinks had about 34% higher risk of anxiety disorders. What you eat can affect how you feel!

5️⃣ Sugar-sweetened beverages strongly predict metabolic disease:
Recent research shows sugar-sweetened beverages are consistently linked with:
-obesity
-type 2 diabetes
-cardiovascular disease
-premature mortality
One analysis found that about 1 cup daily was linked to 12% higher obesity risk and 19% higher type 2 diabetes risk.
