๐Ÿ“– Today is National Read Across America Day! โ€œThe more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places youโ€™ll go.โ€- Dr. Seuss The annual event, celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, is an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. 5 Tips to inspire reading for your child:
๐Ÿ“– Strategically keep books everywhere you spend time. Kids are more often to engage with things when it's "their own idea". Put them in the car, in every room of the house, and tuck them in backpacks and purses. Make them easily accessible to they're more likely to pick them up.
๐Ÿ“– Visit the library often. Libraries provide more than just access to books. Find you local library's schedule of events to increase the literacy skills of your child!
๐Ÿ“– Show then that YOU like reading. Children imitate what they see the adults around them do. Whether they see you read a magazine, newspaper, or novel, it will leave an impression.
๐Ÿ“– Read to your children. No matter their age, reading aloud strengthens their vocabulary and language skills. It also opens up opportunities for discussion.
๐Ÿ“– Have your children read to you, too. This provides a chance to both praise their skills and help them through reading challenges.

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month. Here are 5 facts about Brain Injury:
๐Ÿง  Helmets Help Prevent Head Injuries. Wear helmets when bike or horseback riding and during high contact sports like: Football, Lacrosse, Hockey, Rollerskating, Skiing, Snowboarding, Snowmobiling, and Skateboarding.
๐Ÿง  Screen Time Impacts Concussion Recovery. Research findings suggest that avoiding screen time in the first 48 hours of acute-concussion recovery may greatly shorten the duration of concussion symptoms.
๐Ÿง  Concussions Happen More Often Than You Think. According to the BIAA someone in this country will experience a brain injury every nine seconds.
๐Ÿง  Concussion Symptoms Arenโ€™t Always Obvious. Expected Symptoms include: Headaches, Dizziness, Nausea, Ringing in the ears, and Vision problems. However, UNEXPECTED symptoms are: Sleep difficulties or irregularities, Depression, Anxiety, and Slower-than-normal reaction time. Concussions can sometimes go undetected because on the surface these symptoms may not appear related to a head injury.
๐Ÿง  Older Adults Are at Higher Risk for Concussions, and Preventive Measures Should Be Encouraged More. Proactive steps can include: removing home hazards like throw rugs,
adding for lighting to living space to help avoid tripping, using assistive devices (like handrails, grab bars, raised toilet seats), regularly reviewing medications with a doctor, staying as physically active, and wearing sensible shoes.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Awareness Month. Here are 8 tips on supporting the health of your baby during pregnancy:
๐Ÿ‘ถTake folic acid every day. Folic acid is a B vitamin and can help prevent major birth defects of the developing babyโ€™s brain and spine (anencephaly and spina bifida).
๐Ÿ‘ถPrevent infections. Some infections can be harmful to the developing baby and can even cause birth defects.
๐Ÿ‘ถSee a healthcare professional regularly. Consult a doctor when planning a pregnancy and start prenatal care as soon as possible. Talk to a healthcare provider about taking any medications and vaccinations (shots).
๐Ÿ‘ถKeep diabetes under control. Unmanaged diabetes can increase the chance for birth defects and other problems during pregnancy.
๐Ÿ‘ถAvoid alcohol at any time during pregnancy. Alcohol in a womanโ€™s bloodstream passes to the developing baby through the umbilical cord. Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and a range of disabilities.
๐Ÿ‘ถAvoid smoking ci******es. The dangers of smoking during pregnancy include preterm birth, certain birth defects (cleft lip or cleft palate), and infant death.
๐Ÿ‘ถAvoid ma*****na and other drugs. Ma*****na use during pregnancy may be linked to lower birth weight in infants.
๐Ÿ‘ถ Avoid overheating and treat fever promptly. Overheating can be caused by a fever or exposure to high temperatures (such as getting in a hot tub) that increases a womanโ€™s core temperature.

My Unique Role

Jessica Hatfield, Owner/CEO

I have a radical idea about my role in healthcare. The children in our community cannot be fixed. Because to be fixed, you must be broken. our kids and our families are not broken. They may be facing challenges; challenges that are real valid and affecting their life. I see that.

It IS my role to give children and families access to living happy, healthy, and well balanced lived. This access is created through developing the skills and giving the tools for living life.

It's an access for their VOICE to be heard, their BODY to move, and to become INDEPENDENT.
