Demand for in-home care continues to grow — and it’s reshaping the future of senior care.

This recent McKnight’s Home Care article highlights how Visiting Angels is meeting families where they want to be: at home.

As I was reflecting on my anniversary with Visiting Angels, I noticed a direct correlation between the growth of our business and the discussion of aging in place becoming more prevalent.

Here are some tips to help you support your parents’ independence while keeping them safe and comfortable:

🔹Encourage Social Connections: Staying socially active is crucial for your parents' emotional well-being. Encourage them to stay connected with friends, neighbors, or community groups. Social engagement helps reduce feelings of loneliness and improves overall mental health.

🔹Make the Home Safe and Accessible: Take a good look around your parents' home and make any necessary changes to improve safety. Install grab bars in the bathroom, ensure clear walkways, and remove any tripping hazards. Small adjustments can make a big difference in helping them live independently for longer.

🔹Be Open to Technology: Technology can be a helpful tool for staying independent. Introduce your parents to devices or apps that promote safety and wellness, such as personal emergency response systems, medication reminders, or video calls to stay in touch with loved ones.

🔹Respect Their Routine: Your parents likely have a daily routine that works well for them. Avoid pushing them to change their habits unless absolutely necessary. By respecting their schedule, you allow them to maintain a sense of control and normalcy.

🔹Offer Help, But Don’t Take Over: While it’s important to help when needed, avoid taking over everything. Allow your parents to do what they can independently. Offer assistance with tasks that might be more challenging, but let them maintain autonomy in areas where they still feel capable.

⭐Bonus Tip: If extra help is needed, Visiting Angels can provide assistance with daily tasks, companionship, and ensure your parents’ needs are met while allowing them to maintain as much independence as possible.

Supporting your aging parents’ independence is about balance! Help them stay socially connected, make their home safe, and respect their routines. Small changes can go a long way in preserving their autonomy and well-being!

04/26/2025

Whether your parents are moving to a smaller space or simply decluttering, downsizing your parent's home doesn’t have to be stressful! Start early, approach with compassion, and give your loved one the time and support they need to make thoughtful decisions.

✔️Introduce the Idea Early 💭
Start the downsizing process with a conversation well in advance. Talk openly with your parents about their belongings and involve them in the planning. Discuss the benefits of moving to a smaller space and how you can work together to make the process less stressful.

✔️Handle with Sensitivity 💗
Recognize that parting with possessions can be a difficult emotional experience for your parents. They may view it as another loss, so approach the process with compassion. Understand the sentimental value behind certain items and offer support as they navigate these decisions.

✔️Opportunity Focused Conversation 🌎
Rather than focusing on what must be thrown away, discuss downsizing as an opportunity. Help them see it as a chance to give cherished items to family members, share stories about family mementos, or simply make the process easier for everyone while they’re still able.

✔️Make It Easy and Convenient 🤝
When it’s time to start sorting, keep it simple! Create three bins or boxes: “Keep,” “Donate,” and “Toss.” This will help your loved one categorize their items. Offer to help with delivering items to family members, donating to local organizations, or handling the disposal of unwanted items.

✔️Take Your Time 🐢
Respect the pace your parents need to go at. Downsizing isn’t a race, and it’s important to give them time to reminisce and make decisions. This allows them to feel in control and valued throughout the process.

⭐Bonus Tip: If your loved one is struggling with physical tasks during the move, a caregiver from Visiting Angels can assist with organizing, packing, and even helping with the emotional aspects of the transition.
