Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, shortened to EMDR, is a form of therapy designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. When a person experiences trauma, the memory of the event may become “stuck” or improperly processed, leading to the persistent re-experiencing of the trauma.
During EMDR therapy, your therapist will help you think about the memory while moving your eyes back and forth (or sometimes using sounds or gentle taps).
Those eye movements help your brain sort through the memory, helping you reprocess the traumatic memories so that they no longer provoke emotional distress.
