As a relationship therapist, I see this dynamic a lot — and many people don't have language for it.
In the 1990s, Dr. Jennifer Freyd created the acronym "DARVO," which stands for: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim & Offender
It often looks like this:
You bring up something that hurt you → They deny it → They criticize you → Then somehow… you end up apologizing.
Over time, this cyclical pattern can deeply impact self-trust and emotional safety in relationships.
Accountability sounds like ownership.
DARVO feels like confusion.
If you've experienced this, it doesn't mean you're weak or "too sensitive."
It means the dynamic deserves a closer look, and a skilled relationship therapist can help you do that!
Awareness creates options. And options create change.
