Validation means that you seek to understand, accept, and respect another person’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and reactions. It’s about accepting their individual experience and understanding their emotions.
How can you listen and respond to someone in a respectful way when your beliefs and experiences differ from theirs?
1. Listen to their experience.
2. Seek clarification. Ask questions to understand.
3. Practice empathy.
4. Communicate that their emotions are understandable given their background, experience, and perspective.
Validation doesn’t mean “I agree with you,” it means, “I understand you.”
