Today, we honor what would have been Ryan White’s 54th birthday.

Diagnosed in 1985 after a blood transfusion, at just 13 years old Ryan was told he had six months to live. He defied the odds, living five years longer than expected, and became one of the most influential advocates of his generation. He met the world with extraordinary bravery in the face of stigma, cruelty and isolation, and used his voice to educate millions.

In 1990 U.S. Congress passed the Ryan White CARE Act, which continues to provide HIV care and treatment to over 500,000 people across the United States.

This morning our staff came together to read the names of those who have passed over the years and hold space for those whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. But today is not just a day of remembrance, it is a call to action. Though recent cuts to HIV funding threaten the progress that has been made, it is our responsibility to carry on the legacy of those we’ve lost and continue the fight to end the HIV epidemic.

This World AIDS Day let us all reaffirm our commitment to expanding access to prevention, testing, and compassionate stigma-free care.

"We will continue working tirelessly to be a safe space for those in need, looking for resources, newly diagnosed or living successful lives on the other side of diagnosis. Please join us in a moment of silence today in remembrance, and if you're inclined, wear red in solidarity." - LeeAnna Meadows, CEO
