Wouldn’t it be nice for children all over the world to know that they are loved? The heart of the new book, One, is Love. The simple, but profound message is that you were created in Love and you are always loved. When you are sad or angry, you forget that you are loved and your view of the world is colored by the emotion. To change, take a long, slow breath and if you can, get outside and move in Nature. Look inside your heart, feel the Love that is there. Let your heart get happier and happier until you are One with Love.

Illustrations are done in vintage style watercolor by 90-year-old artist, Yvonne Passwater. Written for young readers, the premise is universal. It is a book that children will want to read over and over again.

A letter from Love states that happiness is our natural condition and allows us to see the world as it is meant to be. Sadness and anger color our vision and cloud our real nature…

Tick removal with vaseline. My biologist friend, Dick Franz, just shared his cure for tick bites. Smear vaseline on it and it will die within about an hour. The vaseline blocks its breathing mechanism and perhaps dehydrates it too. He reports having 1 or more tick bites per week and never any diseases from them. He recommends putting a band-aid on it if you need to so your clothes don't get messed up. I have tried to take them out with tweezers with varying success. The trouble is getting the head out without squeezing the stomach so that it "vomits" its contents inside the wound. Vaseline seems easy. I'm interested in hearing any other remedies you have found to be successful with tick bites or other insect bites.

Thank you to all the people who shared your connection with Nature after the last email. Some live in the woods and are refreshed daily with walks and the sound of wind through trees. One lady shared a memory from childhood with the smell of the grass and trees giving her a special feeling. Another shared insights of the magnificent power of magnolia trees that break through sidewalks and realizing the sacredness of live oaks.

I realized that awareness of Nature is a choice. Years ago we visited the Grand Canyon and our car broke down. We spent the night in a cabin on the South Rim. I let my concern for the car cloud my vision and experience. Majesty is not an automatic cure-all. We have to collude with Nature to find its treasures.

Once I had just received some news about my work in Colorado. I fussed and worried about that on the trip with my husband to Estes Park. We started walking in the woods and the aspen quaking in the wind caught my attention. Soon, it was hard to even remember what I was so worried about.

What helps me most is to stop, take a deep breath and notice what is around me. Sometimes I ask permission mentally to enter the area. It is the home of the beings who live there and I am a visitor. It seems like knocking on the door of a friend’s house before entering. That momentary pause brings me more awareness of the animals and plants I might have missed.

Blessings for your New Year. May it unfold in a way that is just right for you!

I wish you the gift of Nature this holiday season.

I grew up with a mother who enjoyed walks outside. She knew before research validated that walking outdoors is good for you.

Walking in the woods, my mind relaxes its wanderings; it clears and becomes calm. When I open my energy to the pristine surroundings, it brings me closer to connecting with the original thought of harmony on earth.

Quietude helps me shed the narrow thinking I often get caught up in. Resting in the awareness of Nature allows me to sink deeper into the reality of who I am at my core.

The gift nature provides is immeasurable. The precious gift of an acorn holds the intelligence of a fully formed tree able to make acorns and perpetuate indefinitely. That continuous thread of looking ahead amazes me when I consider the consciousness of the giver of that gift.

I am in awe of a grain of sand with all it has been through. I am reminded that this moment was built on eons of history. My intents here now may be in harmony with the greater good or not. What an awesome power contained in this moment. Realizing this helps me choose how to live.

That is one of the gifts of Nature. I would love to hear what you receive from natural surroundings. Email me at donna@donnahenderson.net.
