“Burning feet and trouble swallowing? It might not be random.”

One patient struggled with nerve pain and severe dry mouth, making it hard to even eat a simple meal. She was later diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome.

This condition doesn’t just cause dryness; it can also affect the nerves.

Common signs include:
• Dry mouth and dry eyes
• Trouble swallowing
• Burning or tingling in the feet
• Fatigue and joint pain

Medications like Pilocarpine can help improve saliva and make eating easier.

💡 If symptoms persist, it may be time to look beyond simple dryness.

“Not all Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is the same.”

There are 13 subtypes of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, each with different features and levels of severity.

The three most common types include:
• Hypermobility type, often the most frequently seen, with joint flexibility, pain, and functional challenges
• Classical type, which can involve more noticeable skin changes
• Vascular type, the most serious form, requiring close monitoring of heart and blood vessel health

💡 While some forms may be considered milder, proper evaluation, symptom management, and regular follow-up are still important.

“Chronic hives that won’t go away? It might not be allergies.”

One patient dealt with persistent hives for years, assuming it was just allergies. Even with medications like Benadryl, Claritin, and Zyrtec, nothing seemed to work.

After further testing, she was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune condition that can sometimes present in unexpected ways, including chronic hives.

Treatment with Hydroxychloroquine helped significantly, especially for hives linked to autoimmune causes.

💡 Not all “allergies” are actually allergies. If symptoms persist or don’t respond to treatment, it may be time to look more deeply.

Sarcoidosis: What You Should Know 🩺

Sarcoidosis is a rare autoimmune condition where the body forms granulomas — clusters of inflammatory cells. It can affect the lungs, skin, joints, eyes, and sometimes mimic cancer on imaging.

💡 Treatment tip: Methotrexate can be used as a safer long-term alternative to steroids for pulmonary sarcoidosis.

🦋Hashimoto’s Awareness 🦋

Hashimoto’s disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, yet many people live with symptoms for years before receiving the right diagnosis. Fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, and hair thinning are often dismissed or misunderstood, but they may be signs of an underlying autoimmune condition.

On Hashimoto’s Disease Awareness Day, we highlight the importance of early recognition, proper testing, and comprehensive care.

At One Rheumatology, we look beyond a single symptom. Autoimmune diseases often affect multiple systems in the body, which is why thoughtful evaluation and personalized management matter.

Because autoimmune disease is never “just thyroid.”
