“I had an inguinal hernia which needed care. I live near Fort Myers, and searched for a surgeon to repair the hernia. Most doctors use a mesh to
close the hernia, but a very few are trained to repair using your own tissue. I wanted as few foreign objects in my body as possible,
so I decided on the no mesh option.

I could find only three surgeons within a 3 hour drive who could perform this operation (there are likely more but not easy to find). After eliminating the two closer surgeons(never got past the office staff, they are so popular they don’t take insurance) I called Dr Cober’s office. Dr Cober explained all the options, and I decided to have the surgery with him.

Dr Cober also was mindful of my location, and scheduled appointments in late mornings so I could travel.

At the surgical center, Dr Cober also talked at length with my wife (retired 35 year nurse)and she later confided that no doctor had ever taken the time to explain a procedure so well. Just before the operation, Dr Cober discussed with me that there are actually two natural techniques for the hernia repair. He asked me if I was ok with him choosing which technique to use after he started the surgery and could see my exact damage. I fully trusted him and said yes.

As I write this, I am 4 months post surgery. No pain and no problems, a perfect repair. Doctor Cober has personally reached out to ensure I was healing well. I could not give a higher recommendation for him!”

What is a hernia?

At Cober Hernia, we offer both mesh and no-mesh repairs, tailored to your body and lifestyle.
There are truly many options for inguinal hernia repair surgery. Dr. Cober works closely with you to guide your treatment and address your concerns. Here are just a few that Dr. Cober offers.

Shouldice: this is a tissue-based mesh free procedure practiced most commonly at the Shouldice Clinic in Canada and involves a 4 layer suture repair of the inguinal floor.

Desarda: this is a lower tension tissue-based mesh free procedure that uses a flap of external oblique aponeurosis to repair the hernia.

Lichtenstein: this is an anterior tension-free mesh based repair.

Minimially Invasive (TEP vs TAPP): this is a posterior repair based on mesh using small incisions.

And there are many modifications and variations even within these approaches including the Kang repair, rTEP, and the Andrews Repair.

Most surgical studies support mesh repairs when it comes to lowering the risk of hernia recurrence and chronic pain. However, both the medical literature and leading hernia experts consistently emphasize that the most critical factor in long-term success is the surgeon's skill and judgment-particularly their ability to select the right approach for each individual patient.
