Sensory Innovation Therapies

Sensory Innovation Therapies Providing pediatric occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and special education tutoring in St. Lucie, Martin, & Palm Beach Counties.

My name is Leah Dunleavy, M.A., BCBA, OTR/L, OTD and I am an occupational therapist specialized in working with children, adolescents, and young adults with sensory processing difficulties. In addition to being an occupational therapist, I am also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and use my knowledge in behavior analysis to better understand how the surrounding events, environments, and performance impact participation and independence in everyday activities. My goal is to address the challenges that are impacting participation and independence through using a child and family’s strengths. By incorporating the family into treatment, caregivers learn how to best set up their child’s lives for everyday success. Sessions occur in the home or school environments to address challenges in the naturalistic environments.

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 💛

Every child grows at their own pace, and sometimes they need a little extra support to reach their full potential. Pediatric OT, PT, and Speech Therapy can help children with:

✏️ Occupational Therapy - Building fine motor skills, coordination, sensory regulation, and independence in daily activities
🏃 Physical Therapy - Strength, balance, gross motor skills, and confidence in movement
🗣️ Speech Therapy - Communication, language, social skills, and confidence in expressing themselves

Early support makes a big difference, and every child’s abilities deserve to be celebrated 🌈

🗣️ What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative & Alternative Communication. It includes tools that help children communicate when speech is limited, unclear, or not always reliable.

AAC can look like:
• 🖼️ Picture cards
• 📋 Communication boards
• 📅 Visual supports
• 📱 Speech-generating devices

AAC helps children:
• 🙋 Ask for what they need
• ✋ Say “stop” or “all done”
• 💬 Express feelings like “mad” or “scared”
• 🏠 Participate more fully at home and school

When children have a reliable way to communicate, frustration often decreases — and regulation improves. 🧠✨

And no — AAC does not prevent speech. Supporting communication in any form can actually encourage language development. 🗣️💛

If your child is becoming frustrated, overwhelmed, or misunderstood, it may be helpful to ask:
👉 Does my child have access to functional communication?

Communication builds confidence, connection, and independence. 🌟💛

Did you know that the tiny space between your child’s thumb and index finger can impact their handwriting?✏️

It’s called the thumb web space — and when it stays open, the hand has better stability and control for forming letters!👏

🦶 Toe Walking in Kids: When Should You Worry?

It’s common to see little ones walk on their toes, especially when they’re first learning to walk. But if toe walking continues past age 2–3, it may be worth taking a closer look 👀

Here’s what parents should know:

✨ Occasional toe walking can be part of normal development.
✨ Frequent or constant toe walking may be linked to:

-Tight calf muscles or limited ankle range
-Sensory processing differences (seeking or avoiding input)
-Motor coordination challenges
-Neurological or developmental conditions

🚩 Red flags to watch for:

-Your child cannot walk flat-footed even when asked
-One foot toe walks more than the other
-Frequent tripping or balance issues
-Complaints of leg pain or fatigue

👣 In pediatric therapy (OT or PT), we look at the whole child—strength, flexibility, balance, sensory processing, and functional skills. Early support can prevent muscle tightness and long-term walking changes 💛

If you’re in Florida and have questions about your child’s walking pattern, we’re here to help!
