In 2019, my mother suffered a fracture to her hip. As a result, she was in a great deal of pain. It was a challenging time for my family to watch my mother’s health rapidly decline without the ability to do very much to improve her quality of life. Her doctors were trying to balance her medications in a way that reduced her pain and allowed her to be cognizant of her surroundings. She seemed to teeter between a state of pain and sedated withdrawal.

Her recovery was progressing slowly and she had very little desire to move or participate in life. I discussed alternative medications with her doctor in hopes that we might find something that would reduce her physical pain without causing her to be heavily sedated. I had heard about CBD but didn’t know much about it. The medical staff agreed that CBD might be a good option to try. The likelihood of side effects or adverse reactions were low, so we felt we had little to lose and stopped her prescription pain medications.

In Florida, CBD was not yet available over the counter so I requested a prescription from my mother’s doctor and the staff began administering it to her. The results were astounding. Within a couple of days, my mother began to take interest in the people and activities around her. Prior to CBD, when the medical facility had activities, she would refuse to participate or interact with the other residents. During the next group activity after taking CBD, she was smiling and passing a ball to the other residents.

My mom did not recover from her hip fracture. My hope was that I could find something to help her pain and engage with life, and CBD provided that for her. During her last few months, she still experienced some physical discomfort, but CBD helped her to participate in life with less pain, in spite of her condition.
