Did you know that ongoing knee pain during running, squatting, or using stairs may be linked to runner’s knee?

Runner’s knee, also called patellofemoral pain syndrome, often presents as discomfort around the kneecap. This type of pain can be associated with stress, muscle imbalance, or changes in how the knee tracks during movement.

Paying attention to persistent knee pain matters because it can be a sign that the joint is under strain rather than something to simply push through 🏃‍♂️🦵

The meniscus is a curved piece of cartilage in the knee that cushions the joint. Meniscus tears commonly occur during twisting or pivoting movements and are often seen in sports such as basketball, soccer, and tennis. They can also develop gradually due to wear over time.

Symptoms may include swelling, stiffness, popping or catching sensations, pain on one side of the knee, or difficulty fully bending or straightening the leg.

After time away from regular activity, it is common for muscles and joints to feel stiff or less conditioned. Jumping back into movement too quickly can place extra stress on the body and increase the risk of injury.

Gradual progression, awareness of how your body responds, and allowing time for recovery all play an important role in supporting safe movement and long-term joint health.

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat joint conditions with precision. Through small incisions, surgeons are able to view the inside of a joint and address damage while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissue.

A small camera called an arthroscope provides a clear, magnified view of cartilage, ligaments, and other joint structures. Benefits often include smaller incisions, reduced post-procedure discomfort, and a faster return to daily activity. Many patients are able to go home the same day.

FAQ: When Should I See a Sports Medicine Specialist?

What symptoms should prompt an evaluation?
Ongoing pain, stiffness, swelling, or limited movement that does not improve with rest may be a sign that something more than routine soreness is present.

Does pain always mean a serious injury?
Not always. Some discomfort can come from overuse or changes in activity. However, pain that interferes with daily movement, exercise, or performance should not be ignored.

What happens during a sports medicine evaluation?
Dr. Brotherton reviews symptoms, activity history, movement patterns, and imaging when appropriate to understand how an injury is affecting function and recovery.
Early evaluation helps provide clarity, supports safer movement, and protects long term joint and muscle health.
