Early in his 23 years of recovery, starting with his time at the Betty Ford Center, Interventionist Jimmy Weiss leaned on lessons from his own struggle with addiction including the consequences and effects on his own family to educate staff, patients, and families on alcoholism and addiction. There are clear-cut situations where boundaries are needed immediately, such as abusive situations or when violence is present. And there are other situations where you may not realize the need to set limits because the violations might be subtle. Can Boundaries Work in a Codependent Relationship?

Yes, it is possible to set and maintain personal boundaries in a codependent relationship, but it takes practice. Here’s why: Our values and needs become blurred and enmeshed in codependency; we don’t know where we end and the other person begins.

In codependency, we focus on how someone else can meet our needs rather than focusing on how to take care of ourselves. It’s important to understand that being “self-focused” is not about being selfish. It’s about self-care. When we practice self-care, whether that is getting enough sleep, good nourishment, exercise, connection with others and spiritual growth, we are more resilient. We can think more rationally and respond to situations thoughtfully. We are less resentful. We are empowered to be more present in our relationships with others, because we are more present in the relationship with ourselves.

Intervention is a great start to the process of healing the family. Jimmy can help get help at a recovery center, wither in-house or out-patient recovery help.

Addiction certainly affects the family. But that does not mean that hope is out of reach – neither for yourself nor for the one you love. What is an Intervention?
Looking at the definition of intervention, you have to consider what is happening in the situation. You have a volatile situation in which you have an unhealthy family system sitting in the same room with the substance user who often feels it is everyone else in the room’s fault for their current situation. You may or may not have an alcoholic or addict who is in denial, and you almost always have a family in denial or that is completely unaware of how they have been affected and how their actions may have affected the situation. Furthermore, you have an alcoholic or addict who has not yet surrendered to treatment or successfully addressed their alcoholism, so we must look at why.
