Spring is here.

Allergic rhinitis and headaches and related mental impairments are the most common complaints that interfere with our daily activities.

Conventional immunotherapy treatments such as intranasal corticosteroids, intranasal cromolyn, OTC antihistamines can be helpful to manage the symptoms in severe cases but it is not a good candidate for prophylactic or chronic treatments.

When considering managing seasonal allergies, there are a number of safe and effective alternatives options besides prescriptive medications and over-the-counter antihistamines. See post for details.

Hope this is helpful.

It turns out, many of us are exposed to microdoses of lead through food (leaded food containers), water (old leaded pipes), fume, occupation exposures, house paint, and ci******es (full of toxic metals). Unfortunately, depends on the level of lead exposure, we are only able to excrete a limited amount through our kidneys. The rest are removed from circulation and stored in our bone marrows.

How do you know if your blood pressure is related to lead toxicity?

Often, one of the early signs of lead toxicity is poorly regulated blood pressure, NOT due to age or genetic makeup.
If you have been struggling with controlling your blood pressure, despite eating a healthy diet and lifestyle modifications, check your total body toxic metal burden would be a wise choice. Early detection could prevent a number of life-threatening cardiovascular diseases and kidney impairment down the line.
A urine test is the preferred method for toxic metal assessment. Usually, there is a set of specific instructions to follow to ensure accuracy. This may or may not involve a chelating agent. Best to work with a trained functional medical doctor to address your health concerns and an environmental specialist to remove potential sources of exposure.

Researchers have discovered listening to therapeutic melodies can increase the brain's plasticity and improve mental resilience.

Our brain release neurochemicals such as endorphins, dopamines, serotonin, or oxytocin when we hear our favorite melodies. Consequently, it helps to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, improve a sense of well being.
Similar benefits are found when we play musical instruments.
For example, one study found when treating PTSD patients, drumming for 90 minutes helps to improve self-worth and reduce in sense of isolation. This result is comparable to traditional talk therapy.

Let music be one of your healing tools.

Music has no boundaries.

We live in a world full of chemicals. Some of these chemicals have been associated with negative changes in our endocrine system and gut microbiota. Chemicals such as BPA, PCBs, phthalate, glyphosate, and parabens are even found to be linked to cellular changes such as DNA damage. These findings have been well documented in the NHANES studies.
Where and how are we exposed to these toxins?
Common sources include household cleaning products, car exhaust, drinking water, or contaminated food.
Below is a snapshot of the health concerns associated with each chemical and where to look to reduce your exposure.

❌BPA- induces early menstruation - found in soap, detergents, toys (especially the ones made in China), water bottles.
❌Phthalates - increase body mass index, worsen allergies, lower testosterone, induce insulin resistance - found in plastic bottles and pharmaceuticals pills.
❌PCBs - interrupt glucose metabolism, increase risk of type II diabetes - found in contaminated food (salmon, dairy products, drinking water).
❌Glyphosate - dysbiosis, increase intestinal membrane permeability - found in corn, soybeans, grains.
❌Parabens - increase estrogen level and associated with estrogen-dependent diseases - found in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food preservatives.

While it is impossible to live in a chemical or toxin-free world. I encourage you to choose organic food and products when possible. Look for products with labels such as BPA free, paraben Free, PCB free.. You get the idea. This helps to reduce your body's total burden.

Aging is has a critical role in our gut health.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centerfound aging produces a significant change in our gut microbes, different than those resulted from using pharmaceuticals or chronic illness.
In general, higher diversity indicates a healthier gut. The researchers found aging:

1. reduces microbe diversity in the stool samples in older participants than younger participants.
2. an increase of specific rod-shaped microbes called coliforms which negatively disrupt gut biome balance.

Although more needs to be learned, here's what we can do to preserve and improve our gut health:

1. Increase fiber-rich food in our diet, at least one meal a day
2. Reduce alcohol consumption
3. Practice gratitude meditation, 3 - 5 times per week
4. Take a high-quality probiotic supplement, consistently

Implement small healthy habits daily.

Habits are the foundations of how we behave, how we think, how we interact and how we make choices.

We don’t get sick in one day. It takes practice. Similarly, don’t expect to become healthy in one day either. It takes time to re-organize and regain balance.

Being sick is a perfect opportunity to revisit our habits and how we get there. While allow healing takes place, we can be conscious of our choices, let go of the poorer ones and replace with a better one. practice to do a little better each time.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Will Duran.

Have you tracked your weekly sugar intake ?

Sugar is most prevalent in processed food and drinks, prepackaged meals, restaurants food and the condiments.

American heart association (AHA) recommends no more than 30 grams of sugar per day for adults. That’s equivalent to about 7 sugar cubes per day. Roughly 210 grams or 49 cubes per week.

Often those added sugar are hidden. It’s a challenge especially for people who have a sweet tooth (myself included) and busy working adults.

Are you aware of your sugar intakes?

What have you tried to monitor or minimize added sugar consumption?

I’d love to hear from you.

We go through different stages and changes in life. However, some are more difficult to accept and deal with.
Taking a pill can be a short term solution but isn’t going to solve the unresolved trauma. over time, these unresolved issues can become psychological burdens, which negatively affects our cardiovascular system.

Are you a tea lover? Have you tried chrysanthemum tea?

I love the mild fragrance, soothing effect, and golden hue.
It is THE TEA I grew up with, aside from green tea. Similar to green tea, chrysanthemum tea has been used in China for centuries and very commonly consumed in day-to-day life (and restaurants).

Like most medicinal tea, it is packed with antioxidants including phytochemicals, minerals, and vitamins.

Benefits of chrysanthemum tea:
🦠Boost immune system
💊Improves cardiovascular health - lower blood pressure
☘️Improve metabolism
💧Anti-inflammatory
😌Release nervous tension
👍🏼Prevent osteoporosis
