We live in a world full of chemicals. Some of these chemicals have been associated with negative changes in our endocrine system and gut microbiota. Chemicals such as BPA, PCBs, phthalate, glyphosate, and parabens are even found to be linked to cellular changes such as DNA damage. These findings have been well documented in the NHANES studies.
Where and how are we exposed to these toxins?
Common sources include household cleaning products, car exhaust, drinking water, or contaminated food.
Below is a snapshot of the health concerns associated with each chemical and where to look to reduce your exposure.
❌BPA- induces early menstruation - found in soap, detergents, toys (especially the ones made in China), water bottles.
❌Phthalates - increase body mass index, worsen allergies, lower testosterone, induce insulin resistance - found in plastic bottles and pharmaceuticals pills.
❌PCBs - interrupt glucose metabolism, increase risk of type II diabetes - found in contaminated food (salmon, dairy products, drinking water).
❌Glyphosate - dysbiosis, increase intestinal membrane permeability - found in corn, soybeans, grains.
❌Parabens - increase estrogen level and associated with estrogen-dependent diseases - found in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food preservatives.
While it is impossible to live in a chemical or toxin-free world. I encourage you to choose organic food and products when possible. Look for products with labels such as BPA free, paraben Free, PCB free.. You get the idea. This helps to reduce your body's total burden.
