DOT Random Testing Rates for 2026 Are Official — Here’s What Employers Need to Know

The U.S. Department of Transportation has published the 2026 minimum random drug and alcohol testing rates for safety-sensitive functions across all DOT agencies.

These minimum annual random testing rates are part of your federally mandated compliance program if you operate in aviation, motor carrier, transit, railroad, pipeline, or maritime environments:

FMCSA (Motor Carrier)
• 50% random drug testing
• 10% random alcohol testing

FAA (Aviation)
• 25% random drug testing
• 10% random alcohol testing

FTA (Transit)
• 50% random drug testing
• 10% random alcohol testing

FRA (Railroad)
• 25% random drug (covered service & MOW)
• 50% random drug (mechanical)
• 10% random alcohol (all categories)

PHMSA (Pipeline)
• 50% random drug testing
• No alcohol random testing requirement

USCG (Maritime)
• 50% random drug testing
• 10% random alcohol testing
