Mark Edward Patterson Sr, 67, of Belleplain, New Jersey, left us on January 30, 2026. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Mark will be remembered for his kind, easy-going spirit and love for those around him. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Harold Patterson, and his sister, Linda Hinkle.
Mark was born on June 21,1958 in Northfield, NJ. He was always extremely proud of the fact that he was born on the first day of summer. Many of his wild and rowdy days were spent in Somers Point, NJ, with his lifelong friends, who remained close to his heart and in contact with him throughout the years.
He shared his life with his wife Jennifer Patterson, whom he met while scuba diving—a love story rooted in shared adventure and love of the ocean. Later in life, he was blessed with a son, Mark Patterson Jr, who became his greatest pride and joy.
Mark began his working life as a pipe welder shortly after graduating high school, a career that took him across the United States and sparked a lifelong love of travel. He later found his calling in real estate, where he worked for more than 30 years. Known for his knowledge, dedication, and integrity, Mark took great pride in his work and was deeply respected by clients and colleagues alike.
Mark Patterson Sr. lived a life defined by a deep love of adventure for both the oceans and the mountains. As an avid scuba diver and artifact hunter, Mark was always drawn to exploration beneath the waves. He spent many years working aboard the Sea Lion as a mate and later as second captain, roles he cherished deeply. Diving the waters off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, was also an area that held a special place in his heart. The time he spent on the water led to countless adventures, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories that he and his family will always hold close.
This past year, Mark set out on one of his greatest adventures yet—an epic cross-country journey across the United States with his wife and their son. It was a trip filled with discovery, time together, and memories that will be carried forward as part of his legacy. True to form, it wasn’t just about the destination, but the experience of seeing the country side by side with the people he loved most.
Beyond his many adventures, Mark found joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life and approached everything with a fun-loving, easygoing spirit. He had a passion for fireworks and delighted in lighting up the sky for those around him. He was a wonderful cook, known for bold flavors and an unapologetic love of garlic—life with Mark was never bland. He loved his classic rock music, especially Frank Zappa, and whether through his familiar presence on Facebook or his daily visits to ShopRite, Mark stayed connected to people in ways both big and small, leaving impressions that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
He is also survived by his sister Carol Vermaat (husband Daryl, two sons Eric & Kevin); Nephew Craig Korb (wife Shannon, two daughters Marley & Lucy)whom were joyfully reunited with the family three years ago, coordinated by Mark solely! And with special acknowledgment to his Godmother, “Saint” Ann Gallagher, who became like a mother to him and shared in the sacred moment of a dual baptism with him and his son six years ago at Belleplain United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held on February 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Belleplain United Methodist Church, 116 Hands Mill Road, Belleplain, New Jersey 08270. A Celebration of Life for Mark Patterson Sr will follow on May 30, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the New Jersey Maritime Museum, 528 Dock Road, Beach Haven, New Jersey 08008, where friends and family can gather to honor Mark’s love of the sea and the adventures that defined him.
