Thinking about starting to run for exercise? It can feel pretty overwhelming at first. It’s tough, there’s loads of advice out there, and yes, it can even hurt sometimes. Here are some simple things to think about:

🔸 Start off with walking or mixing walking and jogging. It’s a great way to ease into it. Maybe aim to walk briskly for 30-60 minutes before diving into a walk-jog routine.

From there, give jogging a shot, alternating with walking for about 15-20 minutes with walk jog 0.1 mile walk / 0.1 mile jog. Slowly increase your jogging time as you get more comfortable.

🔸 Don’t stress if you feel a bit sore. It’s totally normal, especially if you’re new to running or getting back into it after a while. Aches and pains like a sore knee or tight calf are normal for the initial symptoms. But if it keeps bothering you or gets worse, it might be a good idea to get a consultation for PT with us for injury screening. Also you can take 2 days rest for the first 2 weeks between runs.

🔸 Don’t get caught up in how fast you’re going. Seriously, it’s not a race! Your main goal initially is just to feel good while you’re running. Forget about trying to be lightning-fast.

🔸 Keep an eye on your heart rate, but don’t let it freak you out. I often chat with my runners about keeping their runs nice and easy, aiming for a heart rate in Zone 2 or lower. But when you’re just starting out, hitting those lower zones can be tough. Just do your best, and don’t sweat it if you’re not quite there yet. You’ll get there with practice.

So there you have it! Running doesn’t have to be scary. Just take it one step at a time, and remember to have fun out there!

Bunions are those noticeable bumps near your big toe that can get inflamed and uncomfortable. They often come with hallux valgus, a situation where your big toe leans towards the second toe.

Surprisingly, hallux valgus is quite common, affecting at least 2% of kids aged 9 to 10 and nearly half of all adults—especially women. It usually starts on one foot but often ends up affecting both.

Interestingly, your choice of footwear can play a role in how bunions develop, so wearing comfy shoes is a big deal. To manage bunions and hallux valgus, there are some helpful options.

Try using accommodating shoes with wide-toe boxes, use toe separators starting with 30mins/day , and add toe strengthening like splaying exercises. These approaches can ease the discomfort linked with bunions, making it easier for you to keep your feet happy and healthy.
