Diets Have Actually Failed You

I spent way too many years blaming myself for the lack of adherence to diets.

But what I didn’t know then, is what I feel so necessary to share with you today.

A brain based perspective on why diets have failed you.

Diets don’t bend when life is flexible (ie. traveling and enjoying cultural foods). Diets don’t encourage us to honor how we feel and pivot.

And diets often implement rules that end up hardwiring us to become more obsessive about food.

The more we restrict, the more we desire.

Your brain is always made the right call for your safety.

Your body has always known what was best for your immunity.

She has always been intuitive.

If you're looking for a program that teaches you how to refine your intuition, and replace feelings like guilt around food, so you can free up mental space and no longer be burdened by the weight of food obsessive or body image thoughts, I’d like to invite you to apply to my 12 week Brain Based Online Group Coaching Program, Better Expert.

About a year ago, I created a "Self Care Guidebook". I wanted to craft something that wasn't specifically talking about getting massages or baths, but highlighted some of the deeper areas of self care like how to express gratitude or establish boundaries.

I'd invite you to download this free resource here: https://www.coachalyssachang.com/resources/self-care-guidebook

I sprained this ankle at a volleyball tryout when I was 15.

I came down from the net only to land on the opponent's foot.

I grew up an athlete, surrounded by a message where pain was seen as weakness, and subsequently out of necessity I developed the survival response of ignoring it in order to be perceived as strong and essentially to fit in.

However, I realized I was not the exception.

This reflex we have to ignore pain, may come from years of associating pain with weakness.

And soon it becomes hardwired as “a way of life” for us.

But what if we altered our perception of pain and could interrupt the way we normalize it?

Leaving space for safety, stillness and compassion.

In order for many of us to change the way we relate to our bodies, we may first need to understand the role of discomfort/pain.

Neurologically, pain is our brain’s way of telling us to STOP and address something.

It is the most influential behavior change tool we have built into us.

For instance, the times you find yourself achy, sick and glued to the couch.

That is your brain feeling unsafe, interrupting the intense workout pattern and forcing a day(s) of stillness.

So pain (within reason), is your brain asking you to push pause and to alter a behavior that risks your safety.

Our brain is hardwired to keep us alive and it is constantly taking inventory of behaviors that risk our level of safety (ex. Too much exercise, too intense forms of exercise, not enough food, lack of sleep, high stress working environment etc).

So, what is the bigger picture your brain is trying to communicate with your headaches, anxiousness, GI distress, lower back pain?

Please join me in my stories as I elaborate on the concept of pain.

Coach Alyssa Chang

Alyssa was born and raised in Honolulu, HI and moved to California to fulfill the dream of playing collegiate volleyball at California State University East Bay, where she majored in Kinesiology (with an emphasis on exercise and nutrition). Her passion for competing led her to train for four figure competitions in 2010. Through this journey of physical change, Alyssa was exposed to the repercussions of extreme dieting and training. Her journey through metabolic issues has driven her to educate others about these dangers and the effect it can have on the body. She also learned the importance of practicing forms of happiness and self acceptance in order to achieve long term fulfillment, regardless of your shape.
