In a zoo in Ohio, a female gorilla was born and raised in captivity, got pregnant and had a baby gorilla. On the day she had her baby, she didn't know what to do. She had never seen another gorilla nurse, and she had no concept of breastfeeding. Sadly, the baby gorilla died.

When she became pregnant again the gorilla's keeper called La Leche League and volunteer nursing mums went to the zoo to nurse their babies in front of the pregnant gorilla. At first the gorilla ignored them, but as her delivery date grew closer she became very interested. When the baby gorilla was born the mother gorilla forgot all that she'd learned and started to freak out. The keeper quickly called the La Leche League and another volunteer rushed over and slowly showed the momma gorilla what to do. The gorilla watched, mimicking the moves step by step until, with a nearly audible sigh of relief, the gorilla looked down at her chest and saw her baby feeding happily for the first time.

We are no different - breastfeeding is a skill, and sometimes it just helps to watch another mom breastfeed. Thank you to LLLN.I. for this post.

“There’s also probably the fact that you are at home, and in your home environment the physiological process of labour may work better,” said lead researcher Eileen Hutton, the midwifery education program at McMaster University.

For women with low-risk pregnancies, the three-year study found babies delivered at home are at no greater risk than those in hospitals.

Our Story

Hello! I'm Robyn Comfort, a positive minded doula supporting families based off of their unique desires and wishes for their family and the birth of their baby. I support families with education and resources concentrating on the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and labor and birth, and guide families through this intimate transition that is welcoming a baby into their lives. As a doula I'm thrilled to connect with families around the Bay Area to support them through the amazing transition of birthing a child and growing a family. I provide emotional and physical support, resources and mindful guidance through the wonderful and often challenging processes of growing a baby and welcoming that child into the world. I come from a background in Hatha yoga and mindfulness practice; I'm passionate about weaving my foundation in yoga into my prenatal and birth support for the Mamas, couples and the people I serve. I'm passionate about studying they physiology of Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga to offer appropriate and empowering physical and mindful support through breath-led movement in yoga. As a Doula, I offer my services on a sliding scale. If you're on a budget, let's talk. There is a way for you to find the support you're looking for, including but not limited to: Contacting insurance for reimbursement of fees; adding doula support to your baby shower wish list; starting an online gift fund for your family and one of the most important transitions of your life. I also do henna (organic body art) a natural, beautiful way to celebrate a mother, pregnant person, the family and a new family member, either privately or at a Blessingway celebration. I love creating designs for all ages, especially to decorate an already gorgeous baby bump! Congratulations on your growing family! I hope you'll be in touch regarding any questions or curiosities! With gratitude, Robyn
